Indonesian man with bird flu recovering, Health Ministry says

JAKARTA, Indonesia: An Indonesian man hospitalized with bird flu after cooking infected chicken was recovering Thursday, the Health Ministry said.

The 33-year-old plantation worker from central Sumatra has been hospitalized for almost ten days with high fever, coughing and breathing difficulties, a statement said. Testing confirmed he had the H5N1 strain of the virus, which has killed four of five of those sickened with it in Indonesia.

Indonesia has reported 106 people infected with H5N1, and 84 of them have died — more than 40 percent of recorded fatalities worldwide — since it began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in 2003, according to World Health Organization.

Last month, the Indonesian resort island of Bali reported its first two fatal cases.

The virus remains hard for people to catch, but experts fear it will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic.

A 33-year-old Indonesian man, who was contracted by avian influenza, is in critical condition in a hospital at Riau province in Sumatra Island, the Health Ministry said Thursday.

Both of laboratory tests showed that he is positively infected by H5N1 virus, an official of the anti-bird flu center of the ministry named only Ningrum said.

"Two laboratory tests showed that the man is positive of avian influenza," Ningrum told Xinhua.

"He is in critical condition now," she said.

The confirmation has brought the total cases to 106 with 84 fatalities in the hardest-hit country.

Ningrum said that the man has historical contact with chicken before he got the germs of the disease on Aug. 25.

"He processed chicken that he bought from nearby market," said the official.

In December last year, the area, where the man lives, recorded sudden deaths of a number of chickens by bird flu, said Ningrum.

Contact with chicken is the most cause of bird flu death in Indonesia.

Three days after the man felt the germ of the disease, he was admitted in Santa Maria hospital of Pekan Baru, the capital of the province on Aug. 28 and then on Sept. 2, he was admitted to bird- flu designed hospital of Arifin Ahmad in the capital.

Experts fear that the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus could mutate in a certain level that can make them transmittable among humans that can cause a pandemic where million people can be killed.

As the number of victims of the virus keeps slowly rising in the country, the health authorities have decided to use the country's own anti-bird flu vaccine after September to stop the virus spread on human, despite the World Health Organization suggestion to stockpile the vaccines.

Huge territory, traditional way of rising chickens on back yard and lack of obedience of provincial administration in implementing the Jakarta decision to stop the virus spread, are among the obstacles in fighting the bird flu in the country.

So far, the viruses have killed globally 195 out of 323 infected people, most of them in Indonesia with 84 fatalities and 105 cases.

An expert raised questions Tuesday over Tabanan regency Husbandry Office's decision not to undertake a mass culling of birds in Beraban, Kediri, a town in the regency where Bali's latest bird flu victim lived.

Contacted separately, Tabanan Husbandry Office head IGP Suwandi said there had been no reports of dead birds in Beraban.

"Our officials went to Beraban and took samples from chickens, and the test results were negative. Just one month before Ayu's death, the chickens were vaccinated," he said.

Suwandi said the agency would only carry out mass culling according to its procedure.

"We will depopulate in a location if rapid tests for bird flu there show positive test results," he said.

"We do cull fowls in areas where bird flu outbreaks in birds are reported," he said, adding that from March to August the agency had culled 13,094 birds.

Chickens in nine of 10 districts in Tabanan have been infected by the H5N1 strain.
Suwandi said that currently the outbreak in Tabanan is under control.

"There are no reports of dead chickens anymore," Suwandi said.

Mahardika, however, said that culling was still needed.

"The virus can still be present in chickens that are clinically fit due to their vaccinations," he said.

"It is some time since the woman's death however the culling still needs to be done. It is always better late than never," he said.

Meanwhile, bird flu is believed to have reached the island of Nusa Penida to the east of Bali, with one of four new suspected bird flu patients who entered Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar on Monday coming from the island.

INB, 58 from Pendem, Nusa Penida (no new patient, ed), Klungkung regency, was taken to Sanglah Hospital after having been treated at Nusa Penida's health center and at Klungkung Hospital.

Head of Sanglah Hospital's Bird Flu Control Team Putu Andrika said the patient arrived with a high fever and cough. He had contact with a dead chicken a week before he was sick. Some 70 chickens have reportedly died in his home village.

Officials from Klungkung regency said the outbreak in Nusa Penida was possibly due to the increase in bird sales on the island for a religious ceremony.

The other three patients were from Badung regency, Buleleng regency and Denpasar city. They are a four-month-old baby, NKN, from Abian Semal, Badung; a six-month-old baby, K, from Buleleng; and IKS, 24, from Kayu Mas, Denpasar.

Ken Wirasandhi from Sanglah hospital said that there were reports of dead chickens in NKN's neighborhood in Abian Semal, while IKS, who worked as a butcher, also had contact with dead chickens.

"That's why we treat them as bird flu patients," he said.

Sanglah has received 17 suspected bird flu patients since August. Some patients are still being treated in Sanglah's Nusa Indah ward, including four-year IKA, from Sidemen, Karangasem.

Sanglah has treated bird flu patients from five regencies in Bali and from Denpasar city. The avian influenza virus was first discovered in the island-province in 2003 and was endemic in all regencies and in Denpasar by 2005.

JAKARTA, Sept 6 (Reuters) - An Indonesian man has died of bird flu on Sumatra island after coming in contact with sick poultry, bringing the number of people killed by the disease to 85, local health officials said on Thursday.

Officials from the World Health Organisation could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 33-year-old victim, who came from Riau province, fell sick soon after slaughtering and cooking a sick chicken he bought in a nearby market, said Muhammad Nadirin, an official at the health ministry's bird flu centre.

Genetic sequencing tests by an Indonesian laboratory showed that the man had contracted the deadly H5N1 virus, health ministry official Endang Sedyaningsih told Reuters.

Previously, tests from two separate facilities were required by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to confirm a bird flu case, but only one lab carried out the test this time.

The official said that an expert from a second laboratory, Eijkman, which usually conducts a second test, was present for the test. He didn't elaborate.

Excluding this case, Indonesia has had 105 confirmed cases, out of which 84 had been fatal, the highest for any country in the world.

Also excluding the latest case, there have been 327 cases and 199 deaths globally since 2003, World Health Organisation data shows.

The man went to a number of hospitals after suffering fever and breathing difficulties on Aug. 27, before being admitted to a state hospital in the provincial capital Pekanbaru on Sunday, Saad said.

Azizman Saad, head of bird flu management at the Arifin Achmad Hospital in Pekanbaru, said the man had also buried a chicken that was found dead in his backyard.

Sick fowl is the most common way for humans to contract the virus.

Bird flu is endemic in bird populations in most parts of Indonesia, where millions of backyard chickens live in close proximity to people.

While it is largely an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate and spread from human to human, turning into pandemic that could kill millions.

Reports quoted a study of an outbreak within a family on Sumatra in May 2006 by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, which concluded that the H5N1 virus spread among a "cluster" of people. Seven family members died during that outbreak.

Before Indonesia's latest death, the World Health Organization had reported that 199 people have died worldwide of bird flu in 11 countries in Asia and Africa.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The number of bird flu cases in Indonesia has risen to 106 with the positive identification of another sufferer in Hangtuah village, Kampar district, Riau province, the Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of Indonesian people who have died after being infected with the H5NI virus is now 84 meaning that the fatality case rate stands at 79.2 percent, the ministry`s public communication center said in a statement issued here Thursday.

The infected resident of Hangtuah village, identified by the initials GS (33), is the fourth confirmed bird flu patient in Riau province. Two of them have died.

GS, a plantation worker, began to suffer high body temperatures, cough, cold and breathing difficulty on August 25 and was admitted to a local hospital on August 28 and later to two other hospitals in Pekanbaru.

Living in a bird flu endemic region, AG is known to have slaughtered a chicken before he fell ill. He is now still being treated at Arifin Ahmad Hospital in Pekanbaru.
