More suspected bird flu cases in Bali

http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/More-suspected-bird-flu-cases-in-Bali/2007/08/21/1187462238146.html

Health authorities suspect two more people may have contracted a potentially deadly strain of bird flu on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

A 58-year-old man from Jembrana district and a 28-year-old woman from Tabanan are undergoing treatment in Bali's Sanglah Hospital, Bali Health Agency chief Dr Dewa Ketut Oka says.

The suspected cases come a week after Indonesia confirmed its first human bird flu death in Bali. The 29-year-old female victim died on August 12.

Her five-year-old daughter died on August 3 after suffering flu-like symptoms, but her body was cremated before samples were taken for testing.

There have been 83 confirmed deaths from bird flu in Indonesia, the country hardest hit by the virus in the world.

Oka said the provincial health agency had sent samples to Jakarta for testing to determine whether the man and woman had contracted the H5N1 virus.

Two different labs in Jakarta must return positive test results before a case is considered to be confirmed as H5N1.

"They are still (bird flu) suspects. We already sent the samples to the health ministry in Jakarta," Oka told AAP.

"They are both still undergoing treatment."

He said the man, who was a garbage worker, had contact with dead chickens through his job.

"But the woman from Tabanan never had any contact with dead chickens," he said.

"The man from Jembrana is getting better. But the woman from Tabanan - we are still treating, but she is stable."

H5N1 is commonly caught by humans who have contact with infected chickens.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has sent bird flu samples to the World Health Organisation as part of efforts to lure tourists back to Bali.

Indonesia recently stopped sharing samples with international scientists searching for mutations, saying it wanted assurances that any vaccines developed from its H5N1 virus strain would not be prohibitively expensive.

Health ministry spokeswoman Lily Sulistyowati on Monday said an exception had been made for the 29-year-old woman who died on August 12.

Samples were sent to the WHO-affiliated Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta last Thursday to prove to the world "that the virus has not mutated in any way ... and that Bali is still safe to visit," she said.

Experts fear the virus will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic. Currently, most human cases are linked to contact with infected birds.

Tests may ease bird flu fears in Bali

21st August 2007, 15:04 WST

Preliminary tests show a man and a woman on the Indonesian resort island of Bali do not have a potentially deadly strain of bird flu.

But laboratories in Jakarta will test samples from the pair to confirm the results, health officials say.

The man, 58, from Jembrana district, and the woman, 28, from Tabanan, had earlier been declared suspected bird flu cases.

Both are undergoing treatment in Bali's Sanglah Hospital for fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

"From the rapid test result, both were declared negative but the rapid test cannot cancel a bird flu suspect diagnosis," a member of the hospital's bird flu team, Dr Gusti Bagus ken Wirasandhi, told online Indonesian news site Detik.com.

"The blood sample has already been sent to Jakarta."

A week ago, Indonesia confirmed its first human bird flu death in Bali.

Experts fear the virus will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic. Currently, most human cases are linked to contact with infected birds.

Second Bali death attributed to bird flu

http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/Se...ted-to-bird-flu/2007/08/21/1187462238146.html

A second woman may have died from bird flu on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

Bali Health Agency chief Dr Dewa Ketut Oka said the local woman died in the island's Sanglah Hospital about 2pm on Tuesday (5pm AEST).

She was admitted on Sunday with bird flu-like symptoms including fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

An Indonesian Health Ministry staffer, who did not want to be named, told AAP that preliminary test results indicated the woman had the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

Preliminary tests do not have a high degree of accuracy and samples have been sent to labs in Jakarta for confirmation.

"According to information from Sanglah hospital, the regional test for (the woman) is positive," the staffer said.

A local man being treated at the same hospital for suspected bird flu had returned a negative preliminary result, she said.

"The sample for (the male patient) is negative," she said.

Earlier, the online Indonesian news site Detik.com quoted the hospital's bird flu team, Dr Gusti Bagus ken Wirasandhi, as saying both the man and woman had returned initial negative results.

Health officials in Bali are on alert after the island's first human bird flu death earlier this month.

The 29-year-old female victim died on August 12. Her five-year-old daughter died on August 3 after suffering flu-like symptoms, but her body was cremated before samples were taken for testing.

The death sparked fears the island's tourism industry would be hit by a wave of cancellations, but so far that has not happened.

Indonesia has had 104 confirmed human cases of bird flu - 83 of them fatal, the highest death toll for any country in the world.

Experts fear the virus will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic. Currently, most human cases are linked to contact with infected birds.

Bird flu suspect dies in Bali

DENPASAR (JP): A 28-year-old woman suspected of being infected by bird flu died Tuesday less than a week after the lethal virus claimed its first victim on the resort island.

Ayu Srinadi, a chicken trader of Batugaing village in Kediri, Tabanan regency, around 20 kilometers west of capital city of Denpasar, died around 2 p.m. local time, after suffering high fever and acute pneumonia for not more than a week.

Sanglah Hospital's head of bird flu control unit Putu Andrika said Ayu had the same symptoms like that of Sri Widiantari, a 29-year-old woman from Negara of the island's most western part Jembrana regency, who died last week of bird flu.

"Ayu came here with pneumonia and high fever. Her condition was similar to Sri Widiantari's and we highly suspected her of having avian influenza," Putu said.

If confirmed, Ayu would be Bali's second bird flu victim and would add the nation's bird flu death toll to 84 out of 104 cases.

"We're still waiting for test results from Jakarta
," said Putu. He said that they had sent samples from Ayu and another suspected patient, MK, 58 on Monday.

Though working around chicken, according to her husband Wayan Suamba, Ayu had never contacted with any dead chicken nor were there any reports of dead chickens in the area.

Ayu was rushed to the Sanglah Hospital after being treated for two days at the Tabanan Hospital. She entered Sanglah the same day with MK from Negara, who contracted fever and cold three days ago. Around MK's neighborhood were incidences of dead chickens.

Putu said that MK's condition was stable and recovering. (Prodita Sabarini)

One more suspected bird flu patient dies in Bali

Antara - 08/21/07 17:45

The 28-year-old patient, identified as Ni Sri N, died after being treated at the hospital for 36 hours, Dr Putu Andrika SpD, chief of the hospital`s bird flu control team, said.

Sri had earlier been treated at the Tabanan general hospital before being referred to the Sanglah hospital, he said.

She was diagnosed as suffering from high fever and lung infection, he said.

"The results of an x-ray conducted by the Tabanan general hospital also showed the same thing. And her condition deteriorated rapidly," he said.

He said he strongly believed Sri had been infected with a kind of virus.

But he stopped short of revealing the type of the virus.

"We have already sent the results of a laboratory test to Jakarta to ascertain whether she died of bird flu or not," he said.

Suspected bird flu victim dies in Indonesia's Bali

<!-- Subtitle --><!-- Text -->A 28-year-old Indonesian woman suspected of being infected with the bird flu virus died on the resort island of Bali on Tuesday, a health ministry official said.
"She tested positive for bird flu in the local lab. We are waiting to confirm it here," said an official from the health ministry's bird flu information centre in Jakarta.
Two tests must come back positive for the H5N1 virus before a victim is confirmed as part of the official bird flu death toll in Indonesia.
The woman worked as a chicken trader, the Detikcom online news agency reported. Transmission usually occurs directly from birds to humans.
If confirmed, the woman, Ayu Srinadi, would be the country's 84th bird flu fatality. The toll is the highest of anywhere in the world.
The first human bird flu death on Bali was confirmed last week and has raised fears of a possible negative impact on tourism, though the affected Jembrana district in the island's northwest is far from major tourist centres.
Thousands of birds have been culled since then as a precautionary measure and poultry has been banned from being transported in or out of the district for one month.
Avian influenza was found in poultry on Bali more than a year ago.
H5N1 is endemic in birds across nearly all of Indonesia.

The importance of reading carefully what the authorities are saying:
AnneA said:
He [Bali Health Agency chief Dr Dewa Ketut Oka] said the man, who was a garbage worker, had contact with dead chickens through his job.

"But the woman from Tabanan never had any contact with dead chickens," he said.
Turns out the woman was a chicken trader (Dr. Niman's post #169 above). Dr. Oka was careful to say that she didn't have any contact with dead chickens (although I doubt a chicken trader doesn't encounter any dead chickens ever) -- but from his original statement, one might have been led to believe she didn't have any contact with chickens.

I think that going forward we should pay close attention to exactly what Dr. Oka says.

Hat-tip to MomCares for pointing out the discrepancy!
