Summary of current (suspect) cases from the Jakarta Post:

Woman latest suspected bird flu casualty

Prodita Sabarini, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar

A 28-year-old woman suspected of being infected with the bird flu virus died Tuesday, a day after being admitted to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

The woman, identified only as AS, was a chicken seller in Batugaing village in Kediri, Tabanan regency, around 20 kilometers west of the capital Denpasar.

She died around 2 p.m. after suffering from high fever and acute pneumonia for about a week.

The head of the hospital's bird flu control unit, Putu Andrika, said the woman displayed the same symptoms as SW, a 29-year-old woman from Negara, in western Jembrana regency, who died of bird flu last week.

"She came here with pneumonia and high fever. Her condition was similar to SW's and we suspected her of having avian influenza," he said.

If confirmed, AS would be Bali's second human bird flu death and would add the nation's bird flu death toll, which now stands at 83 out of 104 cases.

"We're still waiting for the results from Jakarta," Putu said.

He said the hospital had sent blood samples from AS and another suspected bird flu patient, MK, 58, to Jakarta on Monday.

Though this latest victim worked around chickens, according to her husband, Wayan Suamba, AS had no contact with dead birds.

There have been reports of chickens dying from bird flu in eight districts in Tabanan regency, including in Kediri.

According to husbandry agency officials in Tabanan, the regency has culled 6,447 birds in the eight districts over the last two months.

AS was rushed to Sanglah Hospital after being treated for two days at Tabanan Hospital. She was admitted to Sanglah the same day as MK, a resident of Negara, who had been suffering from a fever and flu-like symptoms for three days.

There were reports of a number of dead chickens in MK's neighborhood.

Putu said MK's condition was stable and the patient was recovering.

Avian influenza in birds has spread from the island's western-most regency, Jembrana, to the more populous southern part of the island, with birds in Tabanan regency and Denpasar city reportedly dying.

After the first human victim of the virus, the Bali administration issued a bylaw to control the trade in chickens. Under the bylaw, no chickens will be allowed to be brought into the island for a month.

Regencies in Bali are also taking steps to contain the virus. In Jembrana, all birds within a one-mile radius of SW's house have been culled.

Meanwhile, a 2-year-old girl has been treated in an isolation room at Arifin Achmad Hospital in Pekanbaru, Riau province, since Monday,

while a 47-year-old man was rushed to Mataram hospital in West Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday after being treated for one day at Selong Hospital in East Lombok.

The man has shown symptoms of bird flu and has a history of direct contact with dead chickens.

"The East Lombok hospital refers to him as a bird flu suspect but we're still conducting lab tests to be sure," said Salim Talib of Mataram hospital.

Bird flu kills Balinese woman, raises death toll to 84
The Associated PressPublished: August 22, 2007

JAKARTA, Indonesia: An Indonesian woman became the second person to die of bird flu on the resort island of Bali, bringing the death toll in the nation hardest hit by the disease to 84, the Health Ministry said Wednesday.

The 28-year-old woman ? who worked for a chicken trader ? died Tuesday after being hospitalized for four days, said spokesman Joko Suyono.

"Tests in two local laboratories came back positive" for the H5N1 strain of the disease, he said. However, he could not say whether samples will be sent to a WHO-collaborating laboratory for confirmation.

Another woman died of bird flu on Bali one week ago, causing fears that it would hurt tourism on the island, which has been struggling to recover since terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005 killed more than 220 people.

At least 194 people ? the majority of them in Indonesia ? have died worldwide from bird flu since it first infected Asian ducks and chickens in 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

The virus remains hard for people to catch, but experts fear it will mutate into a form that spreads easily among humans, potentially sparking a pandemic.

Conditions of suspected bird flu patient in Bali improving
Antara - 08/22/07 18:00

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - The conditions of I Nyoman Mar (58), a suspected bird flu patient being treated at Sanglah Hospital here, are improving, hopital sources said.

Nar, a resident of Banjar Pasar village in Jembrana district, is no longer using a respirator and the patient`s body temperature has also dropped, a hospital official told ANTARA here on Wednesday.

Admitted to the hosptal three days ago, Mar was beginning to enjoy food again and able to sit up.

But the team of doctors who have been treating Mar continue to monitor developments in Mar`s state of health closely.

The hospital has set up a special ward to treat bird flu patients. So far, six suspected bird flu patients have been treated at the Nusa Indah ward with two of them, namely Ni Luh Sri W (29) from Jembrana and Ni Sri N from Tabanan, having died recently.

The Bali provincial administration has since 2003 taken a number of precautionary measures to prevent possible bird flu outbreaks from spreading on the island. It has set up a special team of doctors to deal with the disease, special wards and equipment at Sanglah hospital to treat suspected bird flu patients.

The administration meanwhile would inject Rp1.8 billion more in funds to increase the capacity of Sanglah Hospital`s Nusa Indah ward in anticipation of a possible increase in the number of bird flu patients brought to the hospital.

It has also named two other hospitals -- one in Tabanan and another in Gianyar -- to also become reference hospitals for bird flu sufferers.
