<!-- end .related-media -->JAKARTA (AFP) – A 21-year-old Indonesian woman has died of suspected bird flu, a doctor said Wednesday.
The woman died on Saturday in Doctor Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya, East Java, after showing bird flu symptoms, said Palilingan, a doctor in the hospital's avian flu team who like many Indonesians goes by only one name.
"She had breathing difficulties, high fever and lost consciousness," Palilingan told AFP.
He said the presence of the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus would have to be confirmed after testing of tissue samples.
Two positive results are needed before Indonesian authorities confirm a human bird flu infection.
A health ministry spokeswoman said the ministry had sent experts to check on the condition of poultry in the woman's village in Tulungagung district, East Java.
Indonesia is the country worst-hit by avian influenza with 115 deaths officially recorded since 2003.
Experts fear the virus, which is usually spread directly from birds to humans, could mutate into a form easily transmissible between people, sparking a global pandemic.

More details on a young woman from East Java, who died in Surabaya Hospital. She worked as a housemaid in Surabaya.

In a previous report a woman of 21,was reported to have died in Surabaya on the same day. Same reports says her home village is in Tulungagung.

Here she is 18 years old and coming from another region in East Java, Lumajang Regency.

Both articles report a woman to have died last saterday in dr Soetomo Hospital.

We have to wait for more reports to know if it is 1 or 2 women. Edit: looking at other reports, it seems to be 1 woman, from Lumajang.

Several recent reports on confirmed H5N1 outbreaks in poultry in East Java, including Surabaya region.

It is an interesting side note that this Indonesia situation update from WHO is missing from the cumulative list of updates shown on the page at this link:

Is this a clerical oversight or a deliberate omission?

An excerpt of an article on H5N1 outbreak in poultry in Maros, Sulawesi:

In the meantime the child suspectflu burung ,Ansar, 5, resident of the Village of Pao-pao,Kelurahan Bajimangai, the Mandai Subdistrict, the Maros Regency, was at this time treated by the intention in RSUD Wahidin Sudiro Husodo,Kota Makassar.

That was caused because up to now RSUD Salewangeng Maros does not yet have special facilities the handling of bird flu or avian influenza.

Section Head Kesehatan of the Regency of Maros Firman Jaya added, Ansar it was suspected was affected by bird flu after beforehand could carry out contact with the poultry that died suddenly.

This information was obtained from Anwar, the father Ansar. “ We appointed Ansyar as suspect bird flu because indeed his information he has contact with his poultry that died suddenly.

Moreover, the sign of the illness that was experienced by him then resembled the bird flu sufferer, that is, the high fever and was sick to his throat, ” obviously Firman.

Vice Chairman Komisi C DPRD Maros A Said Patombongi regretted this incident. That showed the achievement of the two related services not more maximal.

In fact, in the low level had the official who was placed in the subdistrict to continue to carry out the monitoring to several areas.

“ I have the feeling of the two agencies not all that worked together . In fact was not difficult to carry out the socialisation. We considered the two agencies were more inactive for the handling of the case of bird flu in Maros, pungkas A Said Patombongi.
