From your commentary:

"The patients have been confirmed to be H5N1 positive, but they are linked to family members who died as early as July 31."

Dr. Niman, I think you need to have "not" inserted in this sentence? [patients have not been confirmed....]. Unless I missed the confirmations?

laidback Al at 12:15"

With the admission of the young boy to the hospital, the official number of people suspected of having contracted bird flu released by the health office stood at 10

Thanks for the ehads up. It should read THREE patients were confirmed.....

Gilang from Pameungpeuk sub-district (i.e. not Cikelet)?

Awesome, LaidbackAl! Thanks.

The latest patient, Gilang, is reportedly being treated at Pameungpeuk Community Health Centre. Pameungpeuk is another sub-district in the Garut Regency -- just as Cikelet is a sub-district (there's also Cikelet village, which is what makes understanding the placenames so confusing! And, yes, it looks like there's a Pameungpeuk village, too.).

Pameungpeuk sub-district is to the east of Cikelet. I think part of Pameungpeuk sub-district borders on Cikelet sub-district -- it looks to me as though Pameungpeuk sub-district is bi-sected by another narrow sub-district called Cibalong, so that there's a "west Pameungpeuk" and an "east Pameungpeuk" [my naming]. I've outlined "west Pameungpeuk" with a red dotted line and "east Pameungpeuk" with a red solid line.

I wonder where this latest patient, Gilang, is from? From somewhere bordering Cikelet sub-district? Or from farther afield?

This looks to be another Cigadog -- not Cigadog village in Cikelet sub-district. It's just too far away from the Cikelet area.

Here's a map of where the 7 Cikelet sub-district villages are (unfortunately not named):

Here's a list of the 7 villages in Cikelet sub-district -- one is Cigadog:

Here's the map of the Cigadog according to the co-ordinates from Google Earth -- it's just too far away. Must be another Cigadog:

Scratch that.

Pameungpeuk sub-district has 7 villages (desa) - easily seen on the map above: Pameungpeuk, Mancagahar, P A A S, Mandalakasih, Jatimulya, Bojong and Sirnabakti
http://www.garut.go.id/static/kecamatan/Pameungpeuk.php

And, according to this, Cibalong has 9 (although I can't make 9 out on the map): Karyasari, Maroko, Sancang, Karyamukti, Sagara, Mekarsari, Simpang, Mekarmukti and Cigaronggong
http://www.garut.go.id/static/kecamatan/Cibalong.php

So, there's Cikelet sub-district with Cibalong sub-district to the east of it -- and Pameungpeuk to the east of that. Cikelet and Pameungpeuk do not appear to border each other.

Someone on another board mentioned that Umar was also being treated (part of his follow up) at Pameungpeuk Community Health Centre, so maybe that's the nearest "hospital" to Cikelet. In which case, that leaves room for Gilang to be from Cikelet as well.

Hat-tip, MomCares!

According to a tourist pamphlet for Garut, Pameungpeuk is 86 km, a 3.5 hour ride, from Garut. A nearby resort is at the very bottom of page 10.

I wonder if Gilang was exposed to Umar or someone else with bird flu in that facility.

Re: INDONESIA - Garut Cluster Part II

Has Indonesia's Monday news come out yet on what's going on with this cluster? It sounds pretty serious to me.

Sorting out the nomenclature...

Sorting out the nomenclature...

Clarifying Indonesian placenames -- the administrative hierarchy seems to be (with common abbreviations in parentheses):

Regency / Kabupaten (Kab.)
Sub-districts / Kecamatan (Kec.)
Villages / Desa
Hamlets / Kampung (Kp.)

A common way that a location might be written with abbreviations in an Indonesian newspaper (this is how Euis Lina's location was written):
Kp./Desa Cigadog, Kec. Cikelet, Kab. Garut

In other words:
Kampung/Desa Cigadog, Kecamatan Cikelet, Kabupaten Garut

Or:
Hamlet/Village Cigadog (because both the hamlet & village are named Cigadog), Sub-district Cikelet, Garut Regency

*****

Garut Regency:

45 Kecamatan / Sub-disctricts [only 31 on the map I've been referring to here -- I can't explain the discrepancy]:

Balubur Limbangan, Banjarwangi, Banyuresmi, Bayongbong, Blubur Limbangan, Buangbulang, Bungbulang, Caringin, Cibalong, Cibatu, Cibiuk, Cigedug, Cigedung, Cihurip, Cikajang, Cikelet, Cilawu, Cisewu, Cisompet, Cisompret, Cisurupan, Garut, Kadungora, Karangpawitan, Karangtengah, Kersamanah, Leles, Leuwigoong, Malangbong, Mekarmukti, Pakenjeng, Pameungpeuk, Pamulihan, Pasirwangi, Peundeuy, Samarang, Selaawi, Semarang, Singajaya, Sukaresmi, Sukawening, Talegong, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul, Wanaraja

http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Kecamatan_di_Kabupaten_Garut

So, for Cikelet, the administrative hierarchy is:

Regency / Kapupaten (Kab.): Garut
Sub-district / Kecamatan (Kec.): Cikelet
Village / Desa (7 altogether in Cikelet sub-district): Cikelet, Linggamanik, Kertamukti, Cigadog, Pamalayan, Karangsari and Cijambe
Hamlets / Kampung (Kp.): Numerous. Some of the ones we've heard of in Cikelet village are - Cibeunteur, Jojok/Jojoh, Pasir Maja, Rancamareme, Rancasalak, Sawah Bera and Tipar [hat-tip, LaidbackAl!].

So far, all of the cases have been from various hamlets in Cikelet village, Cikelet sub-district. There are reports that Euis Lina was actually from Cigadog hamlet, Cigadog village, Cikelet sub-district.

And, the latest patient, Gilang, is being treated in a different sub-district altogether, Pameungpeuk, although that might be where the nearest clinic/hospital is since Umar is reported to go there for follow-up treatments/check-ups. Gilang may prove to be from Cikelet.

*Whew!*

Re: INDONESIA - Garut Cluster Part II

May be redundant, but I found this and wanted to add it to the body of knowledge..
This map from the Garut government site shows all the districts colored and numbered. The map is interactive on the site and you can click on a particular district and access a page with various statistics for that district - unfortunately not in English.

found here: http://www.garut.go.id/static/sekilas/peta/ptadmin.php

pt_administratif.gif

All of the districts of Garut are listed on the site.
38 Kec. Cikelet

39 Kec. Pamengpeuk

40 Kec. Cisompet

41 Kec. Cibalong

42 Kec. Peundeuy

NOTE: Peta is Indonesian for Map

Also found this profile of the hospital, Rumah Sakit Umum dr. Slamet, mentioned in many articles

The family refused when Umar was returned to the hospital.
During in the house, Umar only received the maintenance traditionally.
Results of the last laboratory inspection indicated Umar personally the bird flu negative.
That was justified by I Nyoman Kandun, Pengendalian Breakingprep Penyakit Director General and Department of Health environmental Sanitation.
Although Umar was stated recovered, the local community continued to be asked to be on the alert following had the citizen around that was run off with to the hospital because the sign was similar to bird flu.
Moreover beforehand a citizen died because of being suspected of being affected by this deadly virus.
The case of bird flu also made name noise of the Cikelet Village.
Already two name weeks of this village entered the media's national discussions.
In fact this village only a region was isolated that possibly beforehand almost had not canned be heard reportedly.
The road that was not yet touched asphalt became the Cikelet marker not too many tasted the development.
The quality of means the bad road caused the distance from Garut to need time three to four hours.
For most local communities, lived with the poultry not something that strange.
Maintained the nonpedigreed chicken almost was done by all the head of household.
Indeed, the level of the cleanliness in maintained became the problem because they did not have the special pen.
The cellar became the ideal place for the place of the sheltering poultry.
However after spreading him related that the potential chicken brought bird flu.
The previous citizen was willing their poultries were destroyed.
Ironically, although the plague H5N1 has spread, not all the communities were aware of the threat and how prevented bird flu.
Still was seen by the inhabitants who maintained the chicken and without the worried feeling of holding direct contact with the poultry.
In fact the death of the chicken suddenly often happened.
