EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

In both provinces, clinical signs first observed by field officers are decreased appetite, hypersalivation, lameness (some to lie down), and fever. Mostly diagnosed as bovine ephemeral fever, and treated by providing supportive therapy in the form of analgesics, antipyretics, vitamins and antibiotics. However, after treatments, clinical signs do not disappear but spread quickly to the surrounding livestock in an average of 1-2 days. Clinical signs then develop with the appearance of vesicles/blisters and/or erosions around the mouth, tongue, gums, nose, rashes and nipples. Several dead animals were found, and one cattle had a miscarriage in the last trimester. Disease then spread rapidly to other villages in the provinces. Disease investigation has been conducted in both provinces. Although final result still difficult to define the source of infection, how ever illegal importation of live animals is suspected as the main source of infection. Vaccination will be the main disease control measure. Samples have been sent to OIE reference laboratory to determine the strain of the virus for effective vaccine used. Alert has been broadcasted to all provinces especially those who has history of animal movement from infected provinces (high risk). Increased public awareness and case finding in high risk provinces.

Indonesia cow farmers caught off guard as foot and mouth disease re-emerges ahead of Idul Adha

JAKARTA: Indonesian cattle farmer Dio Nurdin Setiawan, 30, noticed something unusual in one of his cows in early May.

Besides a high fever and a runny nose, it was breathing fast and displayed a lack of appetite. Its saliva was also foamy, said Mr Setiawan, who is based in Gresik, East Java.

Within days, his other cows exhibited the same symptoms, and their hooves started to blister and fester, he told CNA.

Mr Setiawan, who has been a farmer for seven years, has never seen his cattle suffer so much.

“On May 5, officers from the livestock agency came to my farm and found out that all 20 of my cows tested positive for foot and mouth disease (FMD).

“The disease spreads fast, and so after one contracted it, the others in the stall got it too,” he said.

Indonesia was declared free of FMD in 1986, so when officials announced in early May that the contagious disease has spread among cows in East Java, it came as a shock...

...But the disease eventually spread to 16 out of 34 provinces, infecting at least 20,723 cows as of May 22. These provinces have 5.4 million cows in total...

Indonesian farmers pay price of foot and mouth outbreak before Eid sacrifice

BATU: Indonesian farmer Okky Pratama usually sells dozens of cattle for Eidul Azha, making his biggest earnings around the Islamic day of sacrifice, but this year he has sold just five.

A foot-and-mouth disease outbreak has ripped through two Indonesian provinces since April, killing thousands of cows and infecting hundreds of thousands more, raising consumer fears before the July 10 festival.

Clusters of the highly infectious animal virus in East Java and Aceh provinces have rattled cattle farmers and their output during the most profitable time of year in a country with the world’s biggest Muslim population.

“I am pessimistic about the sales. Regular buyers unusually did not send me any purchase inquiries,” said Pratama, whose cow farm in the mountainous Batu City is situated in the hardest-hit East Java province.

“When I contacted them, they said they did not (want to) sacrifice any livestock this year because of the foot-and-mouth disease.”

Profits from the holiday season -- around 60 million rupiah ($4,000) -- account for 75 percent of his annual earnings, 31-year-old Pratama told AFP.

But he has so far lost two of his cattle to the disease -- which was first detected in early May.

Thirty-three others were infected but recovered after intensive care.

As of July 6, the disease had spread to 21 provinces across Indonesia and infected more than 320,000 livestock, according to official data.

Over 2,100 of them have died from the disease...

Indonesia pledges to halt foot and mouth outbreak as virus fragments found in Australia

Viral fragments of foot and mouth have been detected in pork and beef products coming into Australia from China and Indonesia, ratcheting up fears the highly infectious disease could decimate the nation’s livestock industry.

Australia has been free of the disease for over a century but just one positive case of foot and mouth could shut the $27 billion livestock export trade down for months or even years. The federal government has estimated the total cost of a major outbreak at $80 billion.

The news comes as Indonesia implores Australia not to panic, despite a shortage of foot and mouth vaccines or even personnel to administer the shots to livestock as Australia’s northern neighbour battles its first outbreak of the virus in decades...
