Jakarta. The tsunami that devastated the Mentawai Islands off West Sumatra last month featured waves much larger than would normally have been expected from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that spawned it, according to a tsunami expert.

PMI in the early recovery program has targeted several priorities for Mentawai, they are facilitating the development of temporary shelter (huntara/hunian sementara), set up mobile health service, psychosocial support, and collecting recent data for the need of clean water and sanitation in the location at the new settlements.

The government announced that the emergency response to the Mentawai ends today, Monday, November 22nd, 2010. Related to this, PMI has prepared several early recovery programs for Mentawai.

PMI Chairman Jusuf Kalla said, "PMI early recovery programs in the Mentawai particularly to facilitate the construction of temporary shelter as many as 516 units, all targeted to be completed by the end of December 2010."

The government says it will pay Mentawai Islands tsunami victims a living allowance in January.

"The cost of living for tsunami victims has been estimated at Rp 6,000 [67 US cents] per person per day. The maximum number of people in each family entitled to receive such assistance is five. The government will bear the living cost of tsunami victims for one month," West Sumatra Social Service head Kafrawi said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

JAKARTA, 28 December 2010 (IRIN) - Temporary housing construction for some 11,400 people displaced by an October 2010 tsunami on the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia is under way, and the government is also planning to build more permanent housing.

?Our first priority is to build sturdy and safe houses because these are the backbone of their lives,? said Bakrie Beck, deputy for disaster mitigation at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

On 25 October, the islands (comprising some 70 islands and islets) were struck by a 3-5m tsunami triggered by a 7.7 Richter scale earthquake off western Sumatra which destroyed 550 houses and damaged another 200, BNPB said.

Medi Herlianto, BNPB deputy for reconstruction and rehabilitation, said work on hundreds of the some 1,600 temporary shelters required, had begun. The 24-square metre shelters, made of plywood and corrugated iron, are expected to house displaced people for six months.

Half the shelters are being built by the Indonesian Red Cross and half by the government.
