TEN Australians caught up in Indonesian tsunami after a massive quake shakes a southern island.

AN Australian has told how he and other charter boat guests jumped for their lives as a 3m tsunami wave hit Indonesia's southern island, Pagai.

Rick Hallett says a two to three-metre wall of water rolled into a bay in the Mentawai Islands.

He said it picked up one boat and swept it towards his, which exploded in a fireball.

Those on board threw anything that floated into the water including surfboards and fenders and jumped in.

Mr Hallett said several people were carried 200 metres inland, while others scrambled up trees, but amazingly no one was lost.

Dozens of people have died and more than 160 are missing after a 10ft-high tsunami hit the west coast of Indonesia.

The wave has reportedly washed away hundreds of houses in two coastal villages on the Mentawai islands, off the west coast of the island of Sumatra.

Details of the casualties are only just emerging because it has taken 12 hours for rescue and emergency teams to reach the remote location.

"Twenty-three people were killed in the Mentawai islands. One hundred and sixty-seven have gone missing," an official from the country's Disaster Management Agency said.

40 dead in powerful quake

JAKARTA - A TSUNAMI that pounded remote islands in western Indonesia following an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra killed at least 40 people, officials said on Tuesday, with at least 380 still missing.

The 7.5 magnitude quake hit 78 km west of South Pagai in the Mentawai islands late on Monday.

Most buildings in the coastal village of Betu Monga were destroyed, said Hardimansyah, an official with the regional branch of the Department of Fisheries.

The fault that ruptured Monday on Sumatra island's coast also caused the 2004 quake amd monster Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

At 9:42 p.m. local time (14:42 UTC) on October 25, 2010, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Indonesia. The quake struck 20.6 kilometers (12.8 miles) below the floor of the ocean, spawning a 3-meter (10-foot) tsunami on Pagai Island. Pagai is accessible only by boat, and rough seas prevented rescue workers from reaching the island immediately after the disaster. Within roughly 24 hours of the quake, however, news reports told of more than 100 casualties and as many as 500 people missing.

This image shows the region where the earthquake and numerous aftershocks occurred on October 25 and 26, 2010. Bathymetry appears in shades of blue, and topography appears in shades of brown. West of Sumatra, a string of islands runs southeast-northwest. Nearest the epicenter, Pagai is divided into two parts: Pagai Utara in the northwest, and Pagai Selatan in the southeast. Tiny islands fringe Pagai Selatan?s western side. Pagai and its tiny neighbors evidently bore the brunt of the high water.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the October 25 quake resulted from thrust faulting along the subduction zone where the Australia Plate slides below the Sunda Plate. Relative to the Sunda Plate, the Australia Plate moves toward the north-northeast at roughly 57?69 millimeters per year. The USGS described the October 25 event as the latest in a series of ruptures. The quake occurred roughly 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of the 9.1-magnitude earthquake that struck December 26, 2004. Tsunamis from that earthquake killed more than a quarter million people.



Located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia experiences considerable seismic activity, in both earthquakes and volcanoes. On October 26, 2010, the Australian Government?s Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre reported that Mount Merapi on the Indonesian island of Java (southeast of Sumatra) erupted, releasing plumes of volcanic ash.

MENTAWAI ISLANDS - Planes and helicopters packed with rescue workers and supplies landed yesterday on remote Indonesian islands that were pounded by a 3m tsunami, as a news report said Indonesia's tsunami warning system had been vandalised and so failed to warn the islanders.

Two buoys off the Mentawai islands were vandalised and out of service when the tsunami struck, Mr Ridwan Jamaluddin of the Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology told the BBC.

There were no tsunami warnings. The waves swept away villages and killed at least 282 people and left more than 400 others missing.

Dozens of injured survivors of the tsunami languished at a sorely strapped hospital alongside a newly orphaned 2-month-old baby found in a storm drain. The injured lay on mats or the bare floor as rainwater dripped onto them from holes in the ceiling and intravenous cords hung from plastic ropes strung from the rafters. The baby, its lungs filled with fluid and with cuts on its face, blinked sleepily in a humidified crib.

"We need doctors, specialists," nurse Anputra said at the tiny hospital in Pagai Utara ? one of the four main islands in the Mentawai chain slammed by Monday's tsunami.

A relief coordinator acknowledged Friday that aid was being held up. Suryadi, who is coordinating the aid response from West Sumatra, said tons of aid has reached the main towns on the worst-hit islands by helicopter, after rough seas kept boats away for two days.

However, rescue workers say they can't deliver that aid to further-flung coastal villages that are accessible only by foot or by sea because roads are too old or damaged for large trucks.

"We need more boats," Suryadi said. He could not estimate how many boats are now delivering aid, but most of the islands' craft would have been washed away by the wave and helicopters have no place to land in many of the devastated villages.

Jakarta, Oct 31 (AFP) Indonesia today ramped up efforts to help those on remote islands hit by a devastating tsunami as an official put the latest death toll at 449, with 96 missing and feared dead.

Rescuers trying to reach isolated villages were hampered by torrential rains and heavy seas on Saturday as three-metre-high waves pounded the coastline.

But in a rare piece of good news, 135 people were found alive, hiding on high ground and too afraid of another wave to return to their shattered villages.

"The latest death toll is 449, and 96 people are missing," disaster management official Agus Prayitno told AFP.

"Besides the big group of survivors found yesterday, there were also other individuals who have come to the temporary shelters alive. There were also others who returned to their villages," he added.

Storms slow down relief aid delivery
