OPTIMALLY STEM BIRD FLU VIRUS
September 4, 2006 (Antara News)
Jakarta -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Monday called on Indonesian doctors to work optimally in dealing with the spread of the bird flu virus in the country.
In remarks at the unveiling of a statue of Rear Marshal Abdulrachman Saleh at the Salemba campus of the Universty of Indonesia, the vice president noted that Abdulrachman Saleh`s pioneering work as an academic figure at the university`s faculty of medicine (FKUI) and as one of the founders of Indonesian state radio station, RRI, should be an example to all elements of the nation.
"This statue of Abdulrachman Saleh is not supposed to be a mere ornament of the FKUI building. Instead, Abdulrachman Saleh`s spirit and dedication should be taken as an example," Kalla said.
On the occasion attended by officials from FKUI, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and RRI, Kalla reminded the TNI AU that the spirit of Abdulrachman Saleh should be an inspiration to the Indonesian Air Force in serving the nation in the military and aviation fields.
"His spirit of 45 should serve as an example even now in the 21st century with all its technological progress," Kalla said.
To the RRI officials, Kalla said the spirit of the Indonesian state radio station when it was founded also had to be an example in the future, while to the doctors and the students of FKUI, kalla said they should develop their innovativeness and research capabilities to find ways to cure various diseases, including bird flu.
Kalla said Abdulrachman Saleh was a brilliant and an outstanding figure who was able to apply his knowledge in three different areas: military, medicine and technology.
"It is hard to find such a brilliant person like him today. He was a brilliant figure who could apply his knowledge. Today we have many brilliant people but they are unable to apply their knowledge," Kalla said.
