BERITA.NEWS, SINJAI — An outbreak of bird flu in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi, has resulted in the deaths of 6,130 poultry as of October 19, 2026.

To prevent further spread, the Sinjai Livestock and Animal Health Agency (DPKH) is intensifying vaccination efforts, disinfectant spraying, and the monitoring of vehicles transporting poultry.

The Head of the Sinjai Regency Livestock and Animal Health Agency, Syamsul Alam, stated that response measures are being carried out in an integrated manner, taking into account vaccine availability, the total poultry population, and the level of transmission risk in each area.

"Data is being updated daily. Given that only 150,000 vaccine doses are available, we are conducting vaccinations in a realistic and measured way, primarily targeting areas outside the immediate radius of known outbreaks," explained Syamsul Alam on Tuesday (Oct 20, 2026).

According to him, vaccinations are not being administered directly at the sites of active transmission or where dead poultry were discovered. Officials have established a safety buffer zone—extending at least one kilometer from the outbreak sites—to ensure the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign.

In addition to vaccination, the Sinjai Livestock and Animal Health Agency is also intensifying the spraying of disinfectants in poultry coops and their surrounding environments. This measure is intended to curb the spread of the virus and other pathogens that could threaten the health of the poultry. Monitoring of the movement of vehicles transporting poultry at various regional border checkpoints has been intensified.

Farmers are also being provided with education on meeting nutritional requirements and administering vitamins independently to support the health of their livestock.

Syamsul Alam noted that poultry mortality rates have begun to decline following the implementation of an integrated management strategy, which has been ramped up since the beginning of the week.

"Field officers remain on full alert to safeguard the health of livestock owned by residents and to anticipate any potential further outbreaks," stated the former Head of the Sinjai Regency Fisheries Office.

North Sinjai Records Highest Mortality

According to data from the Sinjai Office of Agriculture, Livestock, and Animal Health (DPKH) as of October 19, 2026, the North Sinjai District has recorded the highest number of poultry deaths, with 4,739 birds lost out of a total of 6,130 reported across Sinjai Regency.

Meanwhile, the vaccination target—as outlined in the program data—covers 138,188 birds, with the largest share (33,849 birds) located in the Tellulimpoe District. To date, 6,792 birds have been vaccinated.

Additionally, disinfection efforts have reached 389 households across eight districts. This spraying is part of an initiative to curb the risk of transmission and protect the livestock businesses of local residents.

The Sinjai DPKH continues to optimize prevention and control measures to contain the spread of Avian Influenza (bird flu) and mitigate the risk of economic losses for farmers.

The government urges farmers to remain vigilant, maintain the cleanliness of their poultry enclosures, and promptly report to officials if they discover any birds that are sick or have died under unusual circumstances.
