Re: Indonesia - Bird Flu in Poultry/Animals

There seem to be more reports on H5N1 in poultry in Indonesia lately, it is the season. May be also because more reporting, more awareness? May be.

Last year this time of year same thing: reports on avian flu from Bali, all over Java, several regions in Sumatra and (South) Sulawesi.

Also the same reports of floods everywhere (parts of Jakarta too), including water related diseases like diarrhea, dengue fever, chikungunya.

Peak is expected in february.

Everything seems to be "normal".

Re: Indonesia - Bird Flu in Poultry/Animals

Re: Indonesia - Bird Flu in Poultry/Animals

Apparently this is the protocol in South Sulawesi, we have seen this before.

Three villages were isolated to prevent the spreading of Bird Flu

Barru: The Livestock Service of Kabupaten Barru , South Sulawesi, recently, isolated three villages. The isolation was applied following the death of hundreds of tails of the chicken resulting from bird flu.

The three villages were Lipukasi, Lawallu, and Balusu. Regarding that, the team of teh Livestock Breeding Service asked the resident to gather all of their kept chicken to be destroyed by means of burning and burying him.

The poultry from the three villages also was forbidden to be traded in outside the village.

Moreover, hundreds of chicken coops were sprayed by the official with the liquid disinfektan to stifle the spreading of the virus H5N1 to the other animal.

The resident did not object to the extermination of his poultry. Because, they worried if being not destroyed, this virus could spread to humankind.

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Badung, Bali (ANTARA News) - Some 133 chickens believed to have caught bird flu or Avian Influenza (AI) were culled at a hamlet in Bali`s Badung district on Tuesday, a local animal husbandry official said.

The 133 chickens at Sibang hamlet, Jagapati village, Badung district, were slaughtered one by one, and then burned, Made Madra, head of Badung district`s animal husbandry, marine and fisheries office said.

"It was done based on preliminary suspicion. We still have to get our suspicion confirmed by a laboratory test of samples of the chickens` blood in Jakarta," he said.

The measure was taken after tens of chickens belonging to Sibang residents died suddenly, he said.

Coinciding with the chickens` death, Putu Pranayoga (19), a son of one of the chicken owners, was suffering from high fever, respiratory problems and influenza.

Putu was put in the care of local paramedics and doctors who had already taken samples of his blood.

In addition to the chicken cull, local animal husbandry officials also sprayed the back-yard chicken farms of Sibang residents with disinfectants.

Earlier this year, a 21-year-old woman from Surabaya, East Java, died of suspected bird flu after showing symptoms of the disease.(*)
