Solo, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has been self-sufficient in chicken meat and eggs for years but the domestic poultry industry is not making progress, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said.

"The country has been sufficiently meeting its own need for chicken meat and eggs for the past few years but poultry breeders should now orient their businesses to oversea destinations," the minister told at a seminar on poultry business at Hotel Lor here on Wednesday.

<i>He said after the country had become self-sufficient in chicken meat and eggs, poultry breeders should orient their businesses to export markets, not just to local markets.</i>

The minister admitted the spread of bird flu was a constraint in developing poultry businesses but he said a solution to the problem must be found.

"There are still many regions in the country that are free from bird flu and suitable for export-oriented poultry breeding," Apriyantono said.

He said the Agriculture Ministry would encourage and facilitate whoever was interested in developing poultry businesses.

<i>The minister said although domestic demand for chicken meat and eggs was high, farmers should also strive to supply markets overseas.</i>

Chicken meat and egg production in the country was increasing by 12 percent per annum despite the adverse effect of bird flu outbreaks in the 2002-2007 period.

National Poultry Marketing Information Center (Pinsar) Chairman Hartono said on the occasion the poultry breeding industry was running well in spite of the bird flu pandnemic.

Businessmen in the sector had to work hard to overcome the bird flu problem and convince consumers that their meat was not contaminated by the virus, he said.

In 2003, Indonesia exported 100 tons of chicken meat to Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. But the export was discontinued due to high demand at home.

"We are determined to resume the exports after the bird flu problem has been overcome," Hartono said.

Egg production this year was estimated to reach one million tons and chicken meat production 980,000 tons. Most of the outputs was intended to meet domestic demand.
