Australia Provides RI With More Fund To Fight Bird Flu

Jakarta ( Berita ) : The Australian government was expected to provide the Indonesian government with additional fund worth 18.5 million Australian dollars to fight bird flu in for four years, it was reported here Tuesday.

A press release received by Antara from the Australian Embassy said the aid program has three main targets controlling the spread of diseases to animals, promoting the people's awareness, and stepping up control of diseases affecting human beings and animals.

It was reported that the Australian government would send experts to the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry and Health Ministry to help improve national policies and plans on efforts to prevent the spread of the diseases.

The program on efforts to promote the people's awareness, the purchase of poultry vaccines and training on ways to prevent infections in the different provinces, would hopefully help the people overcome the threat of avian influenza.

The Indonesian government was also expected to cooperate with different Australian institutions in responding to diseases, epidemiology and animal husbandry in the hope the cooperation would increase the reliability of laboratory and hospital personnel in dealing with bird flu cases.

With the latest additional fund, the assistance from the Australian government for Indonesia to cope with bird flu cases totalled A$34 million which was part of the A$100 million from the continental country to fight avian influenza in Asia and the Pacific.

The Australian government has allocated A$15.5 million since 2004 to finance training of laboratory personnel in virus diagnosis, to support a quick responding team in charge of investigating bird flu suspects on human beings and animals, and to provide 50,000 packages of medicines for bird flu (tamiflu) to support the procurement of medicines in the archipelagic country.
