<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Bird flu fears for quake survivors

BANTUL, Indonesia (Reuters) -- Bird flu could threaten survivors of Indonesia's earthquake, an aid agency warned, after finding people whose homes were destroyed staying in chicken sheds. A nearby volcano, meanwhile, repeatedly spewed red-hot lava, hot gases and ash.
Most of the 647,000 people left homeless are living in makeshift shelters -- often just plastic tarps to ward off tropical downpours and the hot sun -- with no toilets or running water.
More than 50 people were staying Saturday in two large empty chicken coops in Pentong in Bantul district. Flies buzzed everywhere, and children played barefoot on bamboo slats encrusted with chicken droppings.
Parji, the 60-year-old owner of one of the coops, told The Associated Press that he wasn't afraid of bird flu.
"There is a slight smell from the dung, but I look after the health of my birds. I am certain there is no bird flu here," he said. No officials had advised them to leave, he said.
Bird flu cases have rocketed in Indonesia in the past month, with some reported in districts surrounding the quake zone.
"We are concerned that people using poultry sheds as shelter are at risk from avian flu and possibly salmonella infection," Dr. Yolanda Bayugo, health director in Indonesia for the British medical aid agency Merlin, said in a statement. She appealed for more tents for survivors.
Activity increased at nearby Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanos, which spewed lava and hot clouds scores of times Saturday, said Subandriyo, a government scientist who uses one name.
Subandriyo said the mountain's lava dome had grown by 17 meters (56 feet) in the past week to reach 100 meters (330 feet).
That raised fears that it could collapse and release a highly dangerous pyroclastic flow -- a fast-moving burst of high-temperature gases and rock fragments that can burn anything in its path, the government volcanology center said.
Scientists say the quake may have also contributed to a weakening of the lava dome.
More than a thousand aftershocks have hit the region since the 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn a week ago, killing at least 6,234 people and injuring 30,000 more. Officials estimate that 135,000 homes were destroyed.
Most aftershocks have been weak, but one overnight jolted survivors awake.
"I picked up my nephew and ran out of the house. It was very strong," said Yudi, who like many Indonesians uses one name. There were no reports of damage from the quake, measured at magnitude 3.4.
Two earthquake survivors committed suicide Friday, one by hanging and the other by jumping down a well, Bantul police chief Lt. Col. Dedy Munazat said.
Both men -- from different villages -- had lost their houses in the quake.
Government officials said 380 people who complained of dizziness and severe stomach pains after eating donated food Thursday were apparently suffering from post-trauma stress. The villagers were treated at four hospitals.
Laboratory tests found that the food was safe, the national disaster agency said.
Thirty more U.S. military medical personnel arrived Saturday on a transport plane, and were followed by a 135-member medical team from Cuba with two field hospitals.
Medical teams have already arrived from Singapore, Japan, Iraq, Malaysia and Pakistan.
Aid officials say many of the injured people treated by overwhelmed doctors shortly after the quake may have to be re-examined and have broken bones reset or infections treated.
The United Nations issued an urgent appeal on Friday for US$103 million to pay for the recovery effort over the next six months -- with about half of that for rebuilding homes.
The massive relief effort comes as Indonesia is still trying to rebuild from the 2004 tsunami, which killed 131,000 people in western Aceh province, and is also fighting bird flu.
Local and international aid workers have yet to reach some remote areas, and delivery of food, medicine and tents has been sporadic in others.

WHO Dismisses Human-to-Human Bird Flu Spread in Indonesia

WHO Dismisses Human-to-Human Bird Flu Spread in Indonesia

WHO Dismisses Human-to-Human Bird Flu Spread in Indonesia
Jun 03, 08:24 AM

JAKARTA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that there is no evidence that efficient transmission of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has emerged from a family cluster of cases in Indonesia.

Analysis now has indicated that the virus itself has not undergone the genetic mutation that might mark its development of a capability for efficient and sustained human transmission, the Antara news agency reported Friday, quoting a statement from the international body.

Seven members of the same family in a village in Karo district, North Sumatra, were exposed to the disease and six died in late April and early May.

Disease experts from WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined Indonesian health officials in examining the cases to determine how these various people were exposed and what those findings may reveal about potential mutation of the H5N1 virus.

This influenza strain, which has caused the deaths of more than 200,000 birds, is thought to have the potential to set off a human influenza pandemic if the virus develops the capability to pass efficiently from human to human.

In trying to find out whether that happened in North Sumatra, health experts put 54 close contacts of the infected family under quarantine. They are being monitored for disease, and receiving an anti-viral drug that has shown some effectiveness in combating H5N1.

"Despite multiple opportunities for the virus to spread to other family members, health care workers or into the general community, it has not, on present evidence, done so," according to the WHO statement.

The H5N1 virus has caused 127 deaths in 224 cases since it was detected in humans in late 2003. In all but a handful of cases, humans have become infected through direct contact with ailing birds, their feces or blood.

Indonesia has detected 48 cases of H5N1, 31 of those appearing since January, and ending in 36 fatalities.

'Likely' more human-to-human bird flu infections in Indonesia

RAW STORY
Published: Saturday June 3, 2006

"In the wake of a cluster of avian flu cases that killed seven members of a rural Indonesian family, it appears likely that there have been many more human-to-human infections than the authorities have previously acknowledged," writes Donald G. McNeil Jr. in an article slated for Sunday's New York Times, RAW STORY has learned.

Also, the Associated Press reports that an aid agency has issued a warning about earthquake survivors in Indonesia who may be in danger of contracting avian flu (link).

"Bird flu could threaten survivors of Indonesia's earthquake, an aid agency warned, after finding people whose homes were destroyed staying in dung-smeared chicken sheds," reports En-Lai Yeoh for the AP.

"More than 50 people were staying Saturday in two large chicken coops in Pentong in Bantul district," the AP article continues. "Flies buzzed everywhere, and children played barefoot on bamboo slats encrusted with chicken droppings."

"We are concerned that people using poultry sheds as shelter are at risk from avian flu and possibly salmonella infection," said Dr. Bayugo, of the British medical aid agency Merlin, the AP reports.

Excerpts from the NY TIMES article:

#

The numbers are still relatively small, and they do not mean that the virus has mutated to pass easily between people -- a change that could touch off a worldwide epidemic. All the clusters of cases have been among relatives or in nurses who were in long, close contact with patients.

....

Until recently, World Health Organization representatives have said there were only two or three such cases. On May 24, Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimated that there had been "at least three." Then, on May 30, Maria Cheng, a WHO spokeswoman, said there were "probably about half a dozen."

And Dr. Angus Nicoll, chief of flu activities at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, acknowledged that "we are probably underestimating the extent of person-to-person transmission."

Bird flu kills eight-year-old Indonesian girl; country sees spike in cases

MARGIE MASON
Thursday, June 01, 2006

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - An eight-year-old girl has died of bird flu, a health official said Friday citing local tests, as a spike in human cases put Indonesia on pace to soon become the world's hardest-hit country.

The World Health Organization has yet to confirm the death, which would bring the country's toll from the H5N1 virus to 37. The girl, from a city on the outskirts of Jakarta, died late Thursday apparently after coming into contact with sick poultry, said Nyoman Kandun, a senior Health Ministry official.

The girl's 10-year-old brother died three days earlier of similar flu-like symptoms, but no samples were taken, said Dr. Hariadi Wibisono, a senior official at the national Health Department. The boy died in the emergency room before being treated, and the family immediately took him home for burial, he said.

"The family reported that chickens died near their house, and we have been told they had contacted with birds," Wibisono said.

Bird flu has killed at least 127 people worldwide since ravaging Asian poultry farms in late 2003. Experts fear the virus will mutate to a form more easily transmissible between humans, potentially sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.

Indonesia trails only Vietnam, where 42 people have died, in the total number of bird flu deaths.

More than 120 people have died of bird flu, mostly in Asia, since late 2003.

The 15-year-old boy, from the town of Tasikmalaya, died on 30 May in the provincial capital, Bandung.

A Hong Kong laboratory is testing samples from a seven-year-old girl who died last week on the outskirts of Jakarta. Again, a local laboratory has tested positive for H5N1.

Her 10-year-old brother died three days later but was not sampled for the virus.

Last month, Indonesia registered avian flu cases at the rate of about three a week.

The World Organisation for Animal Health recently said the disease now appeared to be permanently infecting poultry in Indonesia.

The H5N1 virus cannot yet pass easily from one person to another.

Experts, however, fear the virus could mutate at some point in the future, and in its new form trigger a flu pandemic, potentially putting millions of human lives at risk.

Bird Flu Tied to Indonesia Kids' Deaths

KEDAUNG, Indonesia - When 10-year-old Toni lay sick with a fever last week, his father Suryoto went to a local shop and bought the same cough syrup and flu medicine that had always worked before. But this time was different: The fever refused to break and only burned hotter.

Toni's cough worsened until it began choking him, and Suryoto realized he must get his son to a doctor. It's a decision he now wishes he had made sooner.

"His voice kept getting softer and softer until you could not hear anything," Suryoto, recalled. "He kept saying, 'hard to breathe.'"

The child died just after arriving at the hospital. Suryoto said he can still remember Toni gasping for air and struggling to whisper, "father, father."

He and his wife, Suryani, later learned that bird flu had likely ravaged their child's lungs, but that will never be known for sure because he was buried in a graveyard near their village on the outskirts of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, before samples could be taken.

There was no time to grieve. Suryoto's 7-year-old daughter was also burning up with fever after being taken to a local hospital. Again, the distraught parents were too late. Their little girl died Thursday evening, three days after her brother. Local tests have found she was infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus.

Suryoto, 46, and Suryani, 34, who like many Indonesians use only one name, are left asking how and why? Both had heard a little about bird flu on television, but never dreamed it was in their village or capable of potentially killing two of their children in the same week.

"It's really hit me. I never imagined that this could happen to us" said Suryani, standing with her surviving 4-year-old son on their small concrete porch. "I thought it was only a regular flu."

Specimens taken from the girl have been sent to a World Health Organization-approved laboratory in Hong Kong for confirmation. If positive, it will be another case in a spate of recent deaths gripping Indonesia, which is on pace to become the world's hardest-hit country.

There was an average of one bird flu death every 2 1/2 days last month, bringing Indonesia's toll to 37, only six behind worst-hit Vietnam. The World Health Organization confirmed the latest death, a 15-year-old boy, on Sunday, Indonesian health officials said.

Experts have been concerned about six of seven family members who died in May on the island of Sumatra after testing positive for the virus. An eighth relative was buried before samples could be taken, but WHO considers her part of the cluster - the largest ever reported.

Scientists have not been able to link the infected relatives to contact with sick birds and believe limited human-to-human transmission may have occurred. However, the virus has not mutated and no one outside the family has fallen ill.

Indonesia has been criticized for not working harder to fight bird flu, which is entrenched in the sprawling archipelago of 220 million people. Many local governments have refused to carry out mass poultry slaughters in infected areas and vaccinations have been sporadic at best.

Such measures have helped other hard-hit countries like Vietnam and Thailand to curb outbreaks. Indonesia, however, has a decentralized government where money and the power to make decisions resides with local officials.

In Kedaung village, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) outside Jakarta, dozens of children run barefoot and ride bikes through a soccer field just outside the dead children's house.

It's a typical scene in Southeast Asia - kids playing carelessly amid chickens, goats, sheep and cats in a field littered with garbage and burning trash heaps.

Suryoto points across the grassy field to a small building where a slaughterhouse is run. He said his daughter, Yohana, and her brother played in the rain barefoot near the building about a week before falling ill and likely stepped on chicken remains and droppings.

He never realized such behavior could put them at risk of bird flu.

"I knew nothing about the symptoms of bird flu ... I thought this bird flu came from Thailand," said the slight man who works as a local bus driver. "The disease is very fast - it kills very fast. I was in a state of confusion. They had fever, and I could feel their hearts beating so fast. I was afraid."

Neighbors fear their kids could be next to fall ill and have banned them from going near the slaughterhouse.

After the deaths, Zubaedah, 46, a mother of six, said she sold all 20 of her backyard chickens. None appeared ill, but she wasn't taking any chances.

"We are all very worried," she said, as a rooster scratched the ground nearby. "We never dreamed that such an illness would arrive in our village."

H5N1 can be detected by the molecular method even from buried bodies.<o =""></o>
