Doco reveals Australian cattle tortured overseas

By Anne Worthington for Four Corners
Updated Mon May 30, 2011 4:29pm AEST

Horrific footage from inside Indonesian abattoirs that use Australian cattle has revealed abuse of the animals is widespread.

Footage to be aired on ABC1's Four Corners tonight shows animals kicked, thrashed and beaten, their throats hacked at, eyes gouged and tails broken.

According to analysis of the footage by RSPCA chief scientist Bidda Jones, some animals show signs of possible consciousness when they are dismembered.

In March this year, animal welfare campaigners Animals Australia filmed in 11 randomly chosen abattoirs in Indonesia and provided the footage to Four Corners.

More than a month later, a Four Corners team went to Indonesia and filmed in abattoirs where cattle suffered prolonged and painful deaths.

Government considers live export bans

Updated 49 minutes ago

The Federal Government is considering banning live animal exports to some countries after ABC TV broadcast disturbing footage of Australian cattle being mistreated in Indonesian abattoirs.

Last night's Four Corners program featured footage of Australian cattle being beaten, whipped and kicked prior to slaughter in Indonesia.
According to analysis of the footage by RSPCA chief scientist Bidda Jones, some animals show signs of possible consciousness when they are dismembered.

Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig has introduced an immediate moratorium on a type of animal restraint box used in live exports and says he wants a full briefing before deciding on whether to impose export bans.

The Greens and some independents have called for live exports to be banned immediately and today MP Andrew Wilkie will introduce a private member's bill on the issue into Parliament.

Mr Ludwig says he was shocked by the images and is now examining ways to ban live exports to specific countries.

"I have ordered an immediate investigation... by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and have asked them to provide me with all available options in response to the evidence," he said.

Audits Will Target Slaughterhouses As Cattle Ban Lifts
Ririn Radiawati Kusuma | July 10, 2011

The government will begin audits of as many as 36 slaughterhouses as Australia lifts a monthlong suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia that was imposed in response to an animal cruelty scandal.

?The government is cooperating with the Indonesian Meat Producers and Feedlot Association (Apfindo) and Meat and Livestock Australia to audit 36 slaughterhouses,? Prabowo Respatiyo Caturroso, director general of husbandry and animal health at the Agriculture Ministry, said on Sunday.

Prabowo did not say who would be targeted in the audit, which aims to crack down on the mistreatment of cows after shocking footage in an Australian broadcast exposed the horrible conditions in 11 Indonesian slaughterhouses.
