RI-Australia agrees to develop bird flu vaccine

SYDNEY, Australia (Antara): Indonesia and Australia will cooperate in developing Avian Influenza vaccine as part of the two countries' commitment to fight the deadly disease, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said Wednesday.

The cooperation will be stated in a bilateral agreement, Supari said before meeting with her Australian counterpart Tony Abbot on the sidelines of the ongoing Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) health ministerial meeting.

The Australian government has extended an Rp11 billion (US$1.25 million) worth fund to Indonesia to detect the bird flu.

Australian Ambassador for Indonesia, Bill Farmer, said the fund was part of the Australia package worth to some Rp107 billion. And up to October last year, some Rp62 billion has been spent to fund the deployment of a World Health Organization (WHO)fast reaction team, purchase 50,000 packages of Tamiflu, form the national planning for the pandemic preparedness for Indonesia and the public-basis control.
