Indonesian Pig Exported to Singapore Positive for African Flu Virus

Pigs at the Pulau Bulan farm, Batam, which supplies livestock to Singapore, were confirmed to be infected with African swine fever. The virus was discovered on April 20, 2023, in a pig carcass at an abattoir in Jurong, where the animals were butchered for food.
Quoting The Straits Times, Tuesday (2/5), after a consignment of pigs sent to Singapore was found to be infected with the virus, authorities in Indonesia immediately tested samples of pigs from the Pulau Bulan farm.

Head of the Veterinary Authority at the Riau Islands Province's Food, Agriculture and Animal Health Agency, Honismandiri, said the pigs were likely infected with a new type of African swine fever virus. This is because the clinical symptoms of the pigs sent to Singapore were slightly different from those previously found in North Sumatra.
They don't have diarrhea or bleeding. The pigs may have been infected by wild boars or crows migrating from other islands nearby," he said.

After this incident, Singapore decided to stop importing live pigs from Bulan Island. Honismandiri said that farms had been closed and all shipments of live pigs and fresh pigs from Bulan Island had been suspended since April 21, 2022. Apart from that, the government has also tightened biosecurity on the island and the movement of people and the shipment of goods is restricted.
Honismandiri also said that all pigs that were infected and kept in the same pen had been destroyed. Likewise, half of the 70 thousand pigs in the Pulau Bulan farm are currently in quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus infection.
The pigs on the farm were vaccinated against cholera after infection appeared in the area in early 2022. Swine cholera and African swine fever show similar symptoms and can cause death in pigs.
However, until now scientists have not found a vaccine that can fight the African swine fever virus. While African swine flu cannot infect humans, it is highly contagious among pigs that are being raised.:tiphat:https://kumparan.com/kumparanbisnis...gapura-positif-virus-flu-afrika-20KIqu7gpIx/2

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Investigation of African swine fever (ASF) in PT. Indotirta Suaka (PT. ITS) has been started in response to the finding of ASF viral DNA in the imported pigs by the Singapore Food Agency. Field investigation in PT.ITS followed by laboratory investigation in Disease Investigation Centre (DIC) Bukittinggi confirmed that ASF has been introduced to PT. ITS. Source of infection is still unknown, however mechanical vector (ex. flies), fomite and wild boar might play important role for the introduction of ASF to the farm

Residents Asked to Be Aware of African Swine Fever

June 02, 2024, 11:05 | Editorial team

JAKARTA - The Jayapura Papua Regency Government (Pemkab) has appealed to residents in the area to be aware of African Swine Fever.

Acting Regent of Jayapura Triwarno Purnomo in Sentani said that residents or breeders should take various anticipatory steps early by administering vaccines.

This followed dozens of pigs in two villages in East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, namely Ayapo and Nolokla, which died suddenly.

"We hope that residents or breeders will improve coordination with Jayapura Regency Plantation and Livestock Service officers, as well as follow the health protocols that have been provided," he said.

According to Purnomo, whenever there are symptoms that cause livestock such as pigs to lose their appetite, they immediately contact the Jayapura Regency Government through the Plantation and Livestock Service to find a solution.

"Here, skills and good communication are also needed from residents or pig breeders to the relevant agencies, so that they can jointly prevent the spread of African swine fever in Jayapura Regency," he said.

He explained that information obtained from the Plantation and Livestock Service was that a drug or vaccine for African swine fever already existed and was ready to be distributed to farmers or residents.

"Once again, this vaccine or medicine is given to pigs that are still alive or healthy so that it can break the 'chain' of pig deaths in Jayapura Regency, especially in Ayapo and Nolokla Villages," he said.

He added that the deaths of dozens of pigs in Ayapo and Nolokla villages have not yet been detected whether they were infected with the African swine fever virus or other diseases.

"To find out about this, further examination by a team of experts is needed, so that residents or breeders increase their vigilance so that similar cases do not occur in other villages," he said.
