Thousands of Pigs Dead, NTT Animal Husbandry Service Sets One Standby

Suara.com - The Provincial Government of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), through its animal husbandry service, has set one on alert, after nearly three thousand pigs in five districts have died, as a result of being suspected of being infected by the African Swine Fever Virus (ASF). The five districts are Belu, Malacca, North Central Timor, South Central Timor, Kupang District and Kupang City.

Only Flores has not been infected, so anticipatory measures are needed to control and break the distribution chain.

The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) moves quickly by deploying the investigation team since Friday (07/11/2020). The team is tasked with supervising and monitoring the ASF Virus case.

"We are directly involved in monitoring in order to take quick and strategic steps to deal with this outbreak," said Inspector IV, Inspectorate General, Ministry of Agriculture, drh. He added, his party through the working area in NTT, namely the Kupang Agricultural Quarantine and Ende had carried out optimization of supervision at various entry gates such as airports, ports and cross-border posts and would continue to be improved.

Information dissemination and outreach to the community have also been carried out and continue to be made part of the monitoring and control effort. Collaboration with the agriculture office and related parties will also be increased.

"We suppress the number of pigs infected by the virus at the scene, at the same time we break the chain of distribution in 17 districts that are still free," said Agus.

MAUMERE - From February 2020 to July 14, 2020 there have been 460 pigs reportedly dead with the Hog Cholera and African Swine Fever (ASF) viruses in Sikka Regency of East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) and causing billions of rupiah in losses.

According to Mauritz, in February, the number of pigs reportedly killed was 21, March 15, April 6, May 64 and in June increased dramatically to 226 and by mid-July there were 135.

More than 24,000 community-owned pigs in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have died after being exposed to the African swine fever (ASF) since the beginning of this year, local authorities have confirmed.

NTT Animal Husbandry Agency acting head Artati Loasana reported that at least 24,822 pigs had died from the virus across 11 out of the province’s 21 regencies.

He explained the most important thing that must be maintained by both breeders and the general public is to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the pen so that pigs are not susceptible to viruses.

"Generally, clinical symptoms that occur in pigs have fever, refuse to eat, high heat, and usually there is discharge from the rectum and foaming at the mouth," he said.

He said that the Department of Agriculture and Livestock has taken steps to tackle the death of pigs, since February 2020 through an instruction from the Regent of Ende to stop the entry and exit of pigs and their processed products.
