Bird flu hits Indonesia's tsunami-battered Aceh

JAKARTA, Dec 21, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Avian Influenza has infected tens of thousands of fowls in Aceh province, which was devastated by tsunami in December 2004, an Indonesian Health Ministry official said here Thursday.

After infecting scores of chickens in one district in North Aceh regency at the end of December last year, the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus now has contracted tens of thousands of chickens in seven districts of the regency, said Suyono, a member of the investigation team of the ministry for combating avian flu, who has just returned from the province.

Mahrozar, an official of the health department of the North Aceh regency, said all preventive measures had been taken to prevent the virus from spreading.

The Indonesian health ministry has ordered to slaughter all poultry in radius of one kilometer and to vaccinate all of them in radius of three kilometers.

The official said two out of the seven districts were hit by the tsunami in 2004, the Senedon district and Santa Lira Bayu district.

On Dec. 26, the Aceh province is to commemorate the second anniversary of the tsunami.

Re: Indonesia - Aceh (Sumatra)

Hat tip for the Indonesian Committee for BF

16 Suspect Cases in North Aceh Test Negative for Bird Flu

Tests conducted at laboratories at the Ministry of Health Research and Development Center and NAMRU-2, using RT-PCR (Real Time-Polymirase Chain Reaction) and serology, have shown that samples taken from 16 suspect human H5N1 influenza cases in North Aceh regency are negative for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Based on testing of samples taken from the 16 patients treated at Cut Meutia Hospital, one of the patients has tested positive for type A Influenza (common flu), and two patients are positive for type B Influenza (common flu).

The above information is based on a report on bird flu developments in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province received by the Public Communication Center from the Bird Flu Communication Center at the Ministry of Health, on Tuesday, December 20, 2006.

The Bird Flu Communication Center reported that the findings of the investigation into the 16 suspect cases revealed that 10 of the suspect cases had had contact with dead fowl, 1 person had not had any contact with fowl; there was no clear evidence to establish whether or not the other 5 patients were in contact with fowl.

Of the 16 suspect cases, those treated at Cut Mutia Hospital and found to have been in contact with dead fowl are Ai (50 years, Female) admitted on December 11, 2006; RU (50 years, Male) admitted on December 14, 2006; S (60 years, F) admitted on December 13, 2006; FZ (50 years, F) of Cut Ketapang Village, admitted on December 16, 2006; N (50 years, M), Sa (55 years, F) of Sawang admitted on December 14, 2006; IF (7 years, F) of Ampe Village, admitted on December 14, 2006; RZ (16 years, M) of Kampung Jawa Lama village, admitted on December 16, 2006; RD (10 years, M) of Ampe Village, admitted on December 13, 2006; and N (20 years, F) of Ampe Village, admitted on December 14, 2006.

Contact with fowl could not be proven for five suspect cases: NZ (M), An (F), F (F), I (M), and M (F). Finally, F (9 years, F) of Cut Ketapang Village, who was admitted to the Hospital on December 15, 2006, was found to have not been in contact with any fowl.

The emergence of bird-flu cases in poultry in Aceh Utara Regency is worth noting. Poor hygiene and sanitation, a lack of information on bird flu and a lack of information about the recent massive and sudden death of fowl in the area have all contributed to the emergence and spread of bird-flu cases in poultry in Aceh Utara Regency. However, so far there has not been an emergence of human bird-flu cases in 7 affected sub-districts in North Aceh regency; there is no evidence suggesting that the disease has been transmitted from fowl to human beings. Up to this moment, the bird-flu virus affects fowl only.

The Bird Flu Communication Center reports that until December 20, 2006, there have been 74 confirmed human H5N1 cases in Indonesia, 57 of which have died; there have also been 12 probable cases, 4 of which died; 253 suspect cases, 57 of which died; 1 exposed case, and 539 cases which have tested negative for the H5N1 virus.

In Indonesia, bird-flu positive cases have occurred in 9 provinces: DKI (18 cases, 16 of which died), Banten (9 cases, 8 died), West Java (25 cases, 20 died), Central Java (4 cases, 3 died), East Java (5 cases, 3 died), North Sumatera (7 cases, 6 died), South Sulawesi (1 case died), Lampung (3 cases, all survived), and West Sumatera (2 cases all survived).
