Depok faces Chikungunya fever outbreak (West Java)

DEPOK: Residents and health officials fumigated parts of Limo, Depok, on Friday after Chikungunya fever infected at least 200 people in the past month.

The outbreak was attributed to poor sanitation and poor awareness of the mosquito-borne disease.

There were several new cases in the neighboring districts of Tanah Baru and Pancoran Mas, according to the local health agency....

The government is warning people to improve sanitation as the rainy season?s peak approaches to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya fever.

Rita Kusriastuti, the Health Ministry?s animal-borne infectious disease control chief, said that people must remain vigilant after the outbreak of Chikungunya fever that was recently brought under control in Depok, West Java.

?The [Depok] case gives us a warning that devastating illnesses may appear if we pay poor attention to environmental cleanliness,? she told The Jakarta Post.

Environmental conditions as well as the cleanliness of homes affected the health of their occupants, she added.

An outbreak of Chikungunya fever infected 235 people in Depok between Nov. 5, 2011, and Jan. 5, comprising 191 cases in Grogol, 40 cases in Tanah Baru and four cases in Mampang neighborhoods...
