TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 17 residents of Kayoman Hamlet, Serut Village, Gedangsari, Gunungkidul Regency, are suspected to have been exposed to anthrax after eating the chevon or meat from goats slaughtered in Sleman, Bahan Istimewa Yogyakarta. Previously it was reported that the results of laboratory tests on blood samples from cows that died suddenly in Kayoman Hamlet, Serut Village, Kapanewon Gedangsari, Gunungkidul Regency, were confirmed positive for anthrax .
This was conveyed by the Head of the Gunungkidul Livestock and Animal Health Service (DPKH), Wibawanti Wulandari, when confirmed on Monday (11/3/2024).
Previously, DPKH took two samples for laboratory tests, including cow blood and soil used by a goat which also died suddenly.
"The results have come out, and the blood sample from the dead cow was confirmed positive (anthrax)," he said.
Following up on the laboratory test results, Wibawanti said that his party immediately isolated other livestock.
"We immediately isolated them in the respective pens belonging to the residents there. A total of 89 cows and 175 goats, all of them were given antibiotics. We also provided KIE (Communication Information Education) regarding the control and eradication of anthrax to 50 residents close to the location of the incident," he said. (*)

Responding to reports of Anthrax cases in Sleman and Gunung Kidul Regencies, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), on March 8 2024, the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health (Ditjen PKH), Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) has dispatched a team to the location of the incident.
"Our team from the Wates Veterinary Center has carried out investigations and laboratory tests with positive results for anthrax from cow blood and soil samples from Serut village, Gedangsari subdistrict, Gunung Kidul and soil samples from Gayamharjo village, Prambanan subdistrict, Sleman," said Nasrullah, Director General of PKH, Ministry of Agriculture in Jakarta, Tuesday, 12/3.
To prevent additional cases, Nasrullah also said that the Ministry of Agriculture would immediately send assistance in the form of 1000 doses of vaccine, 100 bottles of antibiotics and 1000 bottles of vitamins to be given to livestock in affected areas in DIY.
"This assistance will be distributed to handle anthrax incidents reported from Sleman, Gunung Kidul and other threatened areas," he added.
Meanwhile, regarding the existence of anthrax cases in the community as reported in the media, Nuryani Zainuddin, Director of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture explained that anthrax is an animal disease that can be transmitted to humans (zoonosis).
"I ask the public to remain vigilant, and not to sell or slaughter sick animals, let alone consume them," asked Nuryani
Nuryani further explained that her team together with local services had carried out decontamination and disinfection in polluted environments, namely slaughter locations, livestock pens and burial areas, antibiotic and roborantia treatment, as well as IEC together with UPT Puskesmas. Meanwhile, vaccination will be carried out immediately after treatment.
