<st1:city><st1 ="">[FONT=&quot]Jakarta[/FONT]</st1></st1:city>[FONT=&quot] (ANTARA News)[/FONT][FONT=&quot] - The Indonesian government is still waiting for the realization of the international donors` assistance commitment before it could implement its national strategic plan to fight bird flu infection in the country.

Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said here on Tuesday that up to now no international donors had realized their commitment to assisting the handling of the bird flu infection.

"No international funds have come in. We have not received even a cent," the minister said when addressing the launch of Tamiflu and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) procurement project, which was initiated under the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund.

He said the assistance was badly needed for the implementation of the national strategic plan for the handling of bird flu infection in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1 ="">Indonesia</st1></st1:country-region>.

"We have strong commitment to fighting this disease and have drawn up a national strategic plan but we still had no enough capacity, funds and knowledge. Without regional and international support, we would face problem [/FONT][FONT=&quot]in carrying out the plan," the minister said.

He said that based on the Indonesian government`s calculation, Indonesia needed some US$900 million to implement the strategic plan for a period of three years.

The government has in the state budget set aside some US$50 million per annum for bird flu fight funds while the private sector was expected to provide some US$20 million per annum, he said.

According to the minister, the total funds the government could collect for fighting the influenza virus infection in the coming three years was only about US$200 million, far below the needed US$900 million.

He said that donor countries attending bird flu conference in <st1:city w:st="on">Beijing</st1:city> last January pledged a total fund of US$50 million to help fight bird flu infection in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1 ="">Indonesia</st1></st1:country-region>.

The minister hoped that the donor countries would realize their commitment soon to help the Indonesian government carry out its bird flu elimination program.

"It must be carried out soon because the number of infection cases tended to increase, though there is no indication as to the outbreak of bird flu pandemic disease," he added.

He said 401 suspects had been examined. Of the number, 330 were declared negative with the bird flu virus, 128 were still under observations and 128 had been confirmed positive with the virus.

Two more bird-flu patients die in Adam Malik hospital

Two bird flu patients passed away in Adam Malik Hospital Medan, a spokesman of the hospital dr. Alwinsyah Abidin said here on Monday.

With the latest deaths, a total of six bird flu patients had passed away in the hospital so far, he said.

Raphael (8) died at midnight on Saturday, while Brenita Karo-karo (18 months) died on Sunday evening.

The two children suffered from high fever when they were brought to the hospital. They were later put in an isolated care unit for intensive medical treatment until they passed away.

Currently, Adam Malik Hospital is still treating another bird flu patient, namely Johanes Ginting (25), from Tanah Karo village, North Sumatra.

Of the number, 330 were declared negative with the bird flu virus, 128 were still under observations and 128 had been confirmed positive with the virus.

Indonesia needs some US$900 million for a three-year program to fight Avian flu, he said, adding that the funds would be obtained from the state budget (US$50 million per year) and the private sector (US$20 million per year).

If this is true, 128 confirmed, then we have a problem. However, I still wouldn't rule out a translation error. My reason for this is that if 128 people are confirmed positive, it would sound like there is a more efficient H to H going on. If that's the case, there will be 500-1000 cases in the next few days. If I see those numbers coming out, then i might get excited instead of just breathing hard.

Boneman,
Don't be surprised if those numbers will, all of sudden, include some myserious chik or dengue fever. We are starting to hear reports of an outbreak in that area of dengue. This is either true or a smokescreen. I don't know what to think anymore.

This editorial posted on another thread speaks to the possible mishandling of funds and/or procedure by local officials in Sumatra. IMO, it would be easier to obtain the financial assistance they seek if they demonstrated their commitment to controlling H5N1 instead of just stating they have a commitment.

It's possible they knew the rest of the world would have no choice but to help. They (Indonesia) have leverage, "give us money or risk H2H spreading to your country/world." What choice is there? Sounds a little like blackmail. Interesting thought.
