State moves ahead with efforts to combat possible pandemic
Dec 16, 2006 12:52 PM
Indianapoois - Indiana is heeding the federal government's call to prepare for the possibility of a deadly new flu strain.
State health officials monitor computer data from 70 Indiana hospital emergency rooms that could provide an early warning if a deadly flu outbreak were under way. The state also is using millions of dollars in federal funds to pay for training exercises and systems to purchase and distribute antiviral drugs and to quarantine sick patients.
However, a report this week by the nonpartisan public health advocacy group Trust for America's Health finds Indiana is unprepared in four of ten categories measuring states' ability to respond to widespread health or medical emergencies. Half of the 50 states meet no more than six of the ten criteria.
