INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Health officials are reporting Indiana's first influenza-related death of the season in Marion County.

The Marion County Public Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health reported the death Tuesday and urged people to obtain flu shots to better protect themselves against the respiratory illness that can cause fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.

Second flu death reported in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indiana has now reported a second flu death for the state. This is the most flu deaths reported at this point in the season, according to the Indiana State Department of Health's posted records back to 2011.

Both of the deaths are in the 65+ age group.

Despite less activity than usual, the influenza virus has already caused three deaths in Indiana this flu season.

Influenza is common, with 5 to 20 percent of the population contracting the virus and 3,000 to 49,000 deaths a year. About 200,000 people are hospitalized each year.


Penny Caudill, administrator at the Monroe County Health Department, says that these numbers are a reminder of how deadly the virus can be and how important prevention is.

Indiana’s flu deaths more than double in 1 week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– The amount of flu deaths this season for Indiana has more than doubled in the past week, according to the Indiana State Health Department.

Officials say 22 people have died from the flu this season. Last week, the death toll was at nine.

Of those deaths, eight were between the ages of 25-49, five were between 50-64 years old and nine were at least 65 years old. Eight of the deaths were in Marion County.

The Madison County Health Department is offering free flu shots this year.

ANDERSON — Three Madison County residents have died as a result of flu-related illness this winter season.

Stephenie Grimes, administrator of the Madison County Health Department, said Thursday that the county has three deaths related to the flu.

She said a woman, age 49, died recently and had received a flu shot. The two other flu-related deaths were of people over the age of 65.

Grimes said a 77-year-old woman died on Wednesday.
