Swine flu blamed for illnesses, one death at correctional facility

GREENCASTLE,Ind. (WISH) ? Prison and health officials said Tuesday the H1N1 virus was to blame for one death and about 40 people becoming ill at Putnamville Correctional Facility.

H1N1 made headlines in 2009 for making many people sick. It?s a strain of influenza commonly referred to as swine flu.

Putnamville Correctional officials said 35 inmates became ill, as well as five or six staff members of the facility.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- A 6-year-old girl died of the flu in Henry County this week ? the state's first death from the flu in a patient under 50 this season.

The Henry County Coroner's Office said 6-year-old Jenna Mosier's death was officially being attributed to a bad case of the flu.
