There are a LOT of sick and deceased Canada geese around Bunge (Decatur, IN). Please do not approach them. The state DNR avian biologist is aware and is working with the conservation officers to remove them and test them for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, aka bird flu), as that is likely the case.

Please, do not approach them. Bird flu can spread to humans, pets, and other animals. It kills quickly and the birds will likely all have passed away by tomorrow. There is no cure or anything we can do for them other than keep ourselves safe.

Why can't we, a wildlife rescue, help? If we were to take in the few remaining sick birds and any of them test positive for HPAI, the DNR could come and euthanize every bird we have on site, including our educational ambassadors. We simply cannot risk it. To protect our current flock, we cannot help with this specific case.

I'm sorry that we are unable to help in this sad and difficult situation. The DNR is working on it, and we're going to let them handle it.

How you can help wild birds: If you have bird feeders, make sure you clean them at least once or twice a week with bleach or consider spreading out the food you provide to limit birds coming into contact with each other.

If you find any deceased bird bodies (any species), pick them up while wearing gloves, double or triple bag the bodies, and dispose of them in the trash. Report groups of 6 or more sick or deceased wildlife using the online form for the DNR:

Are you noticing any dead crows? In the last month, there have been more than 60 crows (found deceased) that tested positive for avian influenza.

Crows die. We all understand that. But when we notice more than one, that is unusual. With the recent confirmations of bird flu affecting crows that were found in the City of Terre Haute, there is a strong chance we may see many more.

So what do you do if you see a dead crow ?

Here is what the Indiana Department of Natural Resources advises:

The risk of avian influenza to humans is low. Still, it is recommended that people avoid contact with waterfowl or raptor carcasses as they can. If a carcass appears in an area where it is necessary to remove (e.g., an area with children or pets) the carcass can be removed safely by the property owner or a wildlife control operator can be contracted to remove the carcasses.

The property owner can safely dispose of the carcass themselves by doing the following:

Wear a mask and disposable gloves
Double bag any carcasses and place them in a secure trash container
Wash hands with soap and warm water immediately after disposing of the carcass
Disinfect any equipment used (shovels, pitchfork etc.) by using either rubbing alcohol or a 10% bleach solution.
Disinfect shoes or boots worn while disposing of the carcass with alcohol or bleach solution
Wash clothing worn while disposing of the carcass with warm water
Property owners can also contact a wildlife control operator to remove the carcasses for a fee. A list of wildlife control operators can be found at http://wildlife.IN.gov/.../nuisance-wildlife-control.../
Indiana DNR does NOT offer carcass removal services

Officials suspect bird flu to blame for hundreds of dead crows in Terre Haute

Excerpt:

According to Brendan Kearns, director of the Vigo County Soil and Water Conservation District, avian influenza showed up in the crow population in December when 60 crows were found dead.

Last week, reports of dead crows resumed.

...Kearns said the Department of Natural Resources said it suspects avian influenza is to blame.

Kearns said local crews partnered with the health department last Wednesday and Thursday to collect more than 500 dead crows within a one-mile radius, including an urban area near Wabash Avenue, where 190 dead crows were picked up.

When crews went out Friday, more than 30 additional crows were found in the same location.

Terre Haute has dealt with large winter crow populations since the 1990s. Kearns estimated more than 60,000 crows migrate to the city each year. The birds typically roost in urban areas, causing noise and mess that has frustrated residents for decades.

Fleace said avian influenza outbreaks normally last for a season, but the strain found in December has been in Indiana since 2022.

“It's acting a little bit differently than any avian influenza virus has in the past, in that it's persisting,” Fleace said.
