New avian flu cases affect millions of birds in Jay County

JAY COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reported two additional cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, on Wednesday.

The cases were reported at two commercial egg layer operations in Jay County, and are affecting a total of nearly 2.7 million birds.

The names of the operations were not disclosed. The cases are the fifth and sixth incidents of avian flu in Jay County since early January.

The newly affected birds have been placed under quarantine. A 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) control area and a 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) surveillance zone have been placed around the affected area, covering portions of Jay and Adams counties.

Jay County is located northeast of Muncie along the Indiana-Ohio border.

Derrer Spears said the state’s dashboard only lists avian flu cases that test positive at both Purdue and U.S. Department of Agriculture labs. That caution is partly economically motivated, she said.

“What frequently can happen is, our international trading partners may be looking for reasons to deny foreign products in their country,” Derrer Spears said. “They do that because they may try to find a way to give an advantage to their farmers and that type of thing. We’re very confident we’re not shipping contaminated product overseas. So we don’t post that it’s confirmed until we know that it is because we don’t want to stop trade for any particular region of our state.”

Commercial Duck Farm in Elkhart County Hit with Bird Flu

A commercial duck farm in Elkhart County is now the latest to be hit with Bird Flu. The facility, which has a flock size of nearly 4,200 ducks, has had a positive test for the virus known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

State health officials did not share with Hoosier Ag Today the name of the company, nor give the specific location of the facility that has been affected.

This is the first commercial duck farm in Indiana to have a positive test for the virus since April 2022, when three different production facilities in Elkhart County were affected leading to the depopulation of nearly 18,000 birds.

As of January 3, 2025, there have now been 11 cases of HPAI identified at major commercial poultry facilities throughout Indiana (excluding hobby flocks and small non-commercial farms):

Bird flu cases back on the rise in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Avian Influenza, H5N1, or simply the bird flu, is continuing to cause problems for farmers across the state. Just within the last week, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health reported that eight flocks have been impacted by the virus.​

The problems with bird flu in Indiana go back to 2022. That year, 16 flocks were impacted. Then there was a bit of a break with only one flock impacted in 2023 and two flocks impacted in 2024. But this year, the numbers jumped back up. Since the start of the year, 20 flocks have been impacted.

Again, in a span of just eight weeks, 20 flocks have been impacted in the state. Experts say there is no sign on when case numbers will slow down.

LAGRANGE — Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has now been detected in LaGrange County by the Indiana Board of Animal Health.

A commercial breeder duck facility tested positive recently. Parts of LaGrange County are in the control zone (a 6.2-mile circle around the affected property) while parts of Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble and St. Joseph counties are under surveillance (a 12.4-mile circle from the affected property).,,
