New avian flu cases affect millions of birds in Jay County

JAY COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reported two additional cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, on Wednesday.
The cases were reported at two commercial egg layer operations in Jay County, and are affecting a total of nearly 2.7 million birds.
The names of the operations were not disclosed. The cases are the fifth and sixth incidents of avian flu in Jay County since early January.
The newly affected birds have been placed under quarantine. A 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) control area and a 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) surveillance zone have been placed around the affected area, covering portions of Jay and Adams counties.
Jay County is located northeast of Muncie along the Indiana-Ohio border.
