WASHINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A commercial turkey farm in Indiana has tested positive for bird flu, the Indiana Board of Animal Health says, the first positive commercial flock found in the state in more than a year.

In an update issued Tuesday, the state says the farm in Daviess County has 13,071 birds. The farm is under a quarantine. The state did not name the farm nor say where it’s located. I-69 runs through Daviess County, which is about a 1 hour, 50 minute drive southwest of downtown Indianapolis.

A control area around the farm contains 45 commercial flocks and 48 hobby and backyard flocks within 10 miles, and 56 commercial flocks within 20 miles, the state says. Those 56 flocks include farms in Daviess, Greene and Martin counties. Testing will be done at nearby flocks to determine whether the bird flu has spread.

The last reported avian influenza outbreak in Indiana involved a noncommercial flock in Posey County, the Board of Animal Health says. In that instance, 23 birds were affected...

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A case of Bird Flu has been reported at an Allen County commercial egg layer, in part of what the United States Department of Agriculture is calling the biggest animal health emergency in history...

2.8 Million Birds Impacted as Bird Flu Hits Jackson County Egg Production Facility

The Bird Flu virus has been identified at a commercial egg production facility in Jackson County impacting 2.8 million birds, according to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.

State health officials on Saturday evening would not identify the name of the company, nor the specific location of the facility that has been impacted to Hoosier Ag Today.

This is the largest flock size of an Indiana commercial poultry farm to be impacted by the virus, known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since the outbreak was first found in Indiana on a commercial turkey farm in Dubois County in February 2022. A commercial egg production facility in Jay County with 354,000 hens was depopulated after a positive test for HPAI was identified earlier this month.

Increased drone activity raises concerns near Avian Influenza quarantine areas in Indiana

INDIANA — The Indiana Department of Homeland Security, along with local and federal agencies, has reported a surge in drone activity near sites affected by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Residents in Adams, Allen, Jackson, and Jay counties, as well as areas in Ohio, are urged to report any drone sightings to local law enforcement.

The department says some individuals have attempted to shoot down drones, but this action is illegal and can result in felony charges, including severe penalties.

Drone Activity Reported Near Sites of HPAI

SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and local and federal officials continue to monitor an increase in drone activity near sites where outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza have been identified.

Many have been reported flying over farms identified by the Board of Animal Health,...

Agricultural areas and farms affected by avian influenza are quarantined, and any unlawful entry (by drones or citizens) could spread the virus. Some reports have surfaced to indicate drones have landed on barns in these areas, and there is legitimate concern the drones could transmit disease from one location to the next. Nearby residents should never take action into their own hands but rather contact local officials to report the activity.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Aviation Administration are working with state (IDHS, Board of Animal Health) and local law enforcement to monitor the airspace. Flight restrictions in certain areas are being considered.

Bird flu outbreak hits large flock in Jay County
By Clayton Baumgarth
Posted February 10, 2025

Another commercial egg producer in Indiana has been hit with the bird flu.

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health announced Monday that 912,000 egg-laying hens have been affected and are under quarantine in Jay County. The farm under quarantine has not been revealed publicly.

Since the start of the year, it’s the fourth flock in Jay County and the eighth in the state to have a confirmed bird flu outbreak.

It is also the second-largest outbreak in Indiana since the worldwide outbreak in 2022. The largest was this year at Seymour-based Rose Acre Farms, the second largest egg producer in the country...
