Mamata pulls up senior officers on supply of dead chicken

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today publicly pulled up senior government officers and held them responsible for laxity in dealing with the supply of dead chicken preserved in formalin by businessmen to the city eatries.

Banerjee came down heavily on the principal secretary to the animal resources development department, Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika during an administrative review meeting here and sought explanation from him on why he had no information about the supply of dead chicken preserved in formalin from Baduria in North 24 Parganas district.

Police had conducted raids at Baduria last week after sanitary inspector of Baduria municipality lodged a complaint alleging that dead chicken was supplied to eateries in Kolkata. There are 10,000 to 12,000 poultries at Baduria.

Food safety officials of Kolkata Municipal Corporation's(KMC) health department had conducted surprise checks in eateries at Ultadanga and New Market areas of the city yesterday, a senior official said.

On finding dead chicken ready for supply in New Market area, KMC officials had immediately confiscated them and sent them to the laboratory for tests, he said adding the reports are expected early next week.

H5N1 virus yet to be confirmed as state fails to send samples for test


The state animal resource development (ARD) department is yet to send samples of dead poultry birds to laboratories for confirmation of avian influenza virus at a time when deaths of hundreds of chickens are being reported from several parts of the state.

Sources in the ARD department said that hundreds of chickens are dying in Jhargram, North 24-Parganas and South 24 Parganas showing a fresh fear of bird flu as well as avian flu that had severely affected poultry industry by around Rs 500 crore in 2008.

More than 40 lakh dead poultry birds were culled in the state during that period. A senior official of the state-run Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) at Belgachia said that no samples of dead chickens from the affected areas like Diamond Harbour, Baduria, Jhargram and several other places in the state have been brought so far in the laboratory to confirm the bird flu.
