Under surveillance
A total of 14 deaths were reported from Villages Potrel (9 deaths), Uskapali (2 deaths) and Badali (3 deaths), Block Korkunda, District Malkangiri during 6th September- 18th October 2012. State RRT investigated the outbreak from 20th - 22nd October 2012.
Investigation report submitted by State RRT revealed all the 9 deaths in Potrel village were below 10 years of age. Children died with symptoms of fever, vomiting and altered sensorium leading to unconsciousness; only one had convulsions & respiratory symptoms like dyspnea and bilateral crepitations. Since the district is endemic for malaria, 99 blood samples were collected from Badali Subcentre, out of which 23 were positive for Malaria (Pf) by rapid diagnostic test. In Potrel village 12 blood samples were collected out of
which 1 was positive for Dengue and 3 were positive for Measles. Anticipating the outbreak as malaria, IRS was done in Potrel, Badali and Uskapalli. Environmental survey done in Potrel village suggested that most of the families were rearing pigs and other cattles and villages were surrounded by paddy fields. Case management and preventive measures were undertaken in affected area.
Further, State Task Force team visited the affected area on 2nd October and 3rd November, 2012. On investigation it was found that 739 cases and 24 deaths were reported in 6 blocks (Korkunda, Malkangiri, Kalimela, K.Gumma, Mathili, Khairout) of the District. 12 Subcenters and 16 villages were affected. Out of 739 cases, 272 cases were fever cases and 467 acute respiratory illness cases. And the deaths were below 5 years of age. Out of 109 serum and 2 CSF samples collected, 10 samples were positive for JE (IgM ELISA) and 5 more were border lines positive.

Entomological study done by ICMR team indicated predominance of Culex vishnui.
Active surveillance is being carried out in the affected areas. Block level control rooms have been organized. Medical Officer were sensitized regarding case management. IRS and fogging done. LLIN bed nets were distributed in the community. IEC/BCC regarding sanitation, cleanliness and personal protection done. The outbreak is being further investigated.
