Chandy seeks WHO's help to study viral fever
Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 5 (PTI): An expert team from the World Health Organisation should be called to study the exact cause of the spread of viral fever in Kerala, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said today.
Though the number of new cases came down, the viral fever has seriousely affected the economy of the state, he said raising a submission in the state assembly.
Many of the fever-affected villages faced starvation-like situation, he pointed out.
People of the state were in a state of fear and an expert team from WHO should be invited to study the reasons and recommend remedial measures, he said.
Chandy alleged that government had not distributed food kits and free ration material to all fever affected families as promised.
The compensation of Rs 25,000 each to the relatives of those dead in fever was also not distributed to all, he said.
Replying to the submission, State Health Minister P K Sreemathy said two central teams had already visited the state to study the fever.
The state government would ask the WHO to conduct an study, if necessary, she added.
On the relief given to fever-affected families, she said nearly three lakh food kits had been distributed. Compensation of Rs 25,000 each was also given to 327 families, she added.
Government would take appropriate steps to contain the fever, she said adding that a state level Vector Borne Disease Prevention cell would start functioning soon.
