Tarakeshwar potato prices up on bird flu reports

New Delhi (PTI): The outbreak of bird flu in West Bengal has pushed up the prices of Tarakeshwar potato, a variety grown only in the state, in the futures as well as spot markets despite projection of a bumber crop.

The March delivery of the contract has gone up by Rs 54 to Rs 537.60 per quintal today from Rs 483.60 per quintal on January 15 when bird flu was confirmed in the state.

Prices are bullish today as the demand for the commodity has increased after the spread of bird flu in the state. Buying in spot markets has also gone up, sending the prices up in futures, traders said.

"In fact, we are surprised by the sudden surge in the prices of potato today," Kolkata-based trader Sushanto said.
