MALAPPURAM: A suspected Nipah death has been reported in Malappuram district. The samples of a 23-year-old college student, who died while undergoing treatment for fever at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna last Monday, have reportedly tested positive for Nipah virus during the preliminary examination in Kozhikode.

However, the infection can be confirmed only after getting the results of the samples sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune. The youth, a resident of Naduvath in Thiruvali, was studying MSc Psychology at a college in Bengaluru.​..

Nipah virus outbreak: 175 people in contact list, says Kerala health minister

Kerala health minister Veena George stated that 175 people in Malappuram district have been included in the contact list related to the Nipah virus outbreak, reported news agency ANI.

Out of the 175 who were in contact with the recent Nipah case, 74 are healthcare workers. 126 people are on the primary contact list, out of which 104 are considered to be high-risk. 49 others are categorised under secondary contact.​

Ten people on the list are currently receiving medical treatment at Manjeri Medical College Hospital. The health minister also said that 13 individuals were being tested and their results were awaited...

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Tuesday that 13 people who came into contact with a 24-year-old man who died from the Nipah virus in Malappuram district last week have tested negative for the disease.

Of the total 175 people on the contact list of the deceased man, the samples of 13 people, comprised in the high risk category, were tested negative at the Manjeri Government Medical College in Malappuram, she told reporters here.

The minister said the health department is making all possible attempts to check the spread of the disease by identifying a maximum number of persons who had been in his contact, and giving them preventive medicine.​..

As a part of disease prevention, strong prevention activities are going on at the field level. A field survey has been started in 66 teams within three kilometers of the house of the deceased. As part of this, a total of 1928 houses including 590 houses in Mampat gram panchayat, 447 houses in Vantur and 891 houses in Tiruvalli were surveyed today. 10 in Mampat gram panchayat, 10 in Vandur and 29 in Tiruvalli total 49 cases of fever have been reported in the survey. Out of this, only one case of fever detected by Mambat is included in the contact list.

Educational institutions including tuition centers and Anganwadis have been instructed not to operate in the areas declared as containment zones. The police were instructed in the meeting to ensure compliance of regulations in the containment zone.

MALAPPURAM: The 24-year-old Nipah victim from Thiruvali panchayat may have been infected by consuming fruits from his residential premises, said Health Minister Veena George on Thursday.

“The victim had eaten fruits from his house premises, where the presence of fruit bats has been identified. However, to confirm the source, genomic sequencing needs to be conducted by collecting samples from the fruit bats in the area. If the samples from the bats and the victim match, we can confirm the source. A bat surveillance team from the National Institute of Virology will collect bat samples soon,” Veena George said.

Meanwhile, one person tested negative for Nipah on Thursday, bringing the total number of negative cases to 37. On the same day, two more individuals were added to the contact list, both categorised as high-risk.

A total of 177 people are on the victim’s primary contact list, and 90 are on the secondary contact list. Of those, 81 are healthcare workers, and 134 of the primary contacts fall under the high-risk category.

Two individuals with symptoms were admitted to Manjeri Government Medical College Hospital on Thursday. With this, six people are currently undergoing treatment at Manjeri Medical College, and 21 people at Perinthalmanna MES Medical College Hospital, all showing symptoms of Nipah.​..
