Gujarat rains: toll rises to 81; Nadda asks officials to gear up for monsoon

The rain fury in Gujarat has let up with no downpour reported in past 36 hours, reports said. Death toll in heavy rains and floods in the state climbed up to 81 today with large areas inundated, official sources said here. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda has given topmost priority to advance preparedness of states affected by dengue, in order to prevent the disease and effectively manage it. Rainfall has created flood-like situation in many areas of Gujarat. Amreli district was the worst hit with 36 deaths reported followed by Rajkot four, Bhavnagar three, Surat two and one each from Bharuch and Valsad districts, a Gujarat Disaster Management Authority official said. "Floods, too, cannot be ruled out at the moment," the official added.

At least 26 dead in flash floods in western India

Flash floods triggered by torrential monsoon rain have killed at least 26 people in a west Indian state in the past 48 hours, authorities said Wednesday.

The rain and high winds have also cut power and communications across the north of Gujarat state, raising concerns that villagers may be stranded.

"Over 2,000 villages of north Gujarat have been affected due to the floods," the duty officer in the state's emergency control room told AFP.

Monsoon claims 38 lives, losses in HP pegged at Rs 60 crore

Shimla: With a total loss of Rs 60 crore, monsoon in the state has claimed 38 lives so far. Despite erratic monsoon, rain has damaged houses, cow sheds, roads, water supply schemes across the state.


Due to landslides across the state, eight people died in Bilaspur, seven in Chamba, four in Kangra, seven in Kinnaur, three in Kullu, four in Shimla and six in Sirmaur districts. The state government has disbursed Rs 1.52 crore to the families as relief money.

Due to heavy rains, 122 animals were washed away, causing a loss of Rs 10.39 crore. Besides, 659 households had been damaged with a total loss of Rs 11.9 crore. Rain-triggered landslides also damaged 356 water supply schemes across the state, causing loss of Rs 25crore. Heavy rains had also damaged horticulture and agricultural crops. Several lateral roads had been blocked due to landslides.

Ahmedabad: The death toll due to heavy rainfall in Gujarat has risen to 53.

According to reports, 28 deaths have occurred in the worst-affected Banaskantha district.

On Saturday, four MI17V5 choppers from Ahmedabad, and one each from Jodhpur and Phalodi had been called in for relief work in Banaskantha, in the wake of heavy rains leading to a flood like situation in the state.

Heavy Rain, Floods Kill Over 50 in Bengal

The toll in West Bengal due to heavy rain and floods crossed 50 on Sunday, after at least nine more deaths, including that of four children, were reported from different districts. The four children were killed and four other people seriously injured when they were struck by lightning in Basithat in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday, police said.
Buildings with weak structures collapsed in many places, including in Kolkata, following overnight downpour.
While two people were killed in a building collapse in Katwa in Burdwan district, an elderly man was crushed to death after a portion of his house collapsed in Kolkata. A two-year-old was killed in Murshidabad district when a wall collapsed. A similar death was reported in Bankura district.

Bengal flood death toll rises to 69

KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee after returning from Ashoknagar told reporters at Nabanna that the flood situation was critical. According to disaster management department the death toll rose to 69.

Two passenger trains in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh have derailed minutes apart on a flooded bridge, killing at least 24 people, officials say.
The trains were passing each other near the town of Harda when a flash flood triggered by heavy rain struck the bridge, reports said.
The tracks collapsed and some of the carriages were submerged.
Officials say at least 25 people have been injured and another 300 rescued.

Railway ministry sources said apart from the 12 bodies recovered from the coaches, there are around 12 more bodies found half a kilometer away from where the trains derailed, in the fields nearby and elsewhere. Efforts are on to ascertain if they were also passengers or were locals who fell prey to the flash floods. Railways along with state authorities will determine the identities of these bodies. If it is found that they were train passengers, their families will receive the compensation announced by Prabhu earlier in the day.

KOLKATA: Three more deaths were reported today, taking the flood toll in West Bengal to 100.

"Altogether, 2,590 relief camps have been set up to shelter nearly 4.52 lakh (452,000) marooned people and 835 medical camps were opened," the sources said, adding the total number of affected people was over 93 lakh.

As many as 1,36,256 houses were damaged and 4,90,237 houses damaged partly. Crop over an area of 9,64,689 hectares has been damaged. The affected areas included 235 blocks, 55 municipal bodies, four municipal corporations and 814 gram panchayats (GPs) covering 19,939 villages.

The Indian military has evacuated more than 2,000 residents stranded in the southern state of Tamil Nadu as the death toll from flooding rose to at least 280 after the heaviest rain in over a century.

Forecasts of more rain over the next 48 hours forced the army to work on a war footing to rescue survivors trapped in inundated parts of Chennai.

India's fourth most populous city saw only slight rains on Thursday, but water levels had not receded since a day earlier, when a massive release of water from a brimming reservoir swamped low-lying areas of the city.

At least 18 patients in a private hospital have been killed after heavy rains caused blackouts in the flood-struck Indian city of Chennai, bringing the death toll to 280.

In one of the most shocking incidents, 18 patients in the intensive care unit of the MIOT International hospital died since Wednesday, health secretary J. Radhakrishnan said, after floods took out generators running life-support systems.

New Delhi, Dec 4 The heaviest rains in Tamil Nadu in over a century and floods have left 269 people dead, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday, describing the situation as ?very alarming?.

The minister also told the Lok Sabha that 54 people had been killed in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and two in Puducherry.

?There are no two opinions that the situation in Tamil Nadu is very alarming and very critical. It is not an exaggeration to say that Chennai has turned into an island,? Singh said in the Lok Sabha and later made a similar statement while replying to a discussions on the floods in Rajay Sabha.
