India India landslide death toll jumps to 45: minister
Report? Agence France-Presse
09/15/2012 11:23 GMT

DEHRADUN, India, Sept 15, 2012 (AFP) - The death toll from a series of landslides and floods reached 45 in northern India on Saturday as rescuers pulled 17 more bodies from the debris, a state government minister told AFP.

Most of the deaths occurred in the early hours of Friday after heavy downpours in Rudraprayag and Bageshwar districts of the scenic Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, local disaster management minister Yashpal Arya said.

"Seventeen bodies were found today from the affected areas of Rudraprayag," Arya said, adding that army personnel were helping local rescuers hunting for more bodies in four affected villages.

"We fear that up to 18 more bodies could be still buried in the debris in Rudraprayag," he said in the state capital Dehradun, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) from the district.

Dhemaji & Lakhimpur reel under flash floods

By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Sept 15: Lakhs of people have been affected in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts after flash floods hit the areas due to incessant rainfall in Arunachal. A top Dhemaji district official on Saturday said several rain-fed rivers including Chamaong, Gainadi, Ziadhol, Kumotia and Lali had overflowed in the past 24 hours submerging over 90 villages in the district. The neighbouring Lakhimpur district has also suffered due to the flash floods caused by overflowing of rivers like Ranganadi, Rangajan, Dihing, Kakpoi and Tingra. Sources in the Lakhimpur district administration further said Jiadhol and Kumotia rivers have also inundated vast tracts of human habitation. The sources, however, said that relief materials have been provided to all the flood- affected villages in both the districts. Several areas of Arunachal Pradesh also remained cut off from the other parts of the country as the floods in Dhemaji washed away a 30-metre-long portion of National Highway No 52 at Bhebeli in the district on Thursday night. The residents of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts have alleged that the flash floods are the fallout of the government?s failure to repair the embankments - most of which were breached by flash floods in June this year.

Parts of Gogamukh revenue circle and the entire Jonai, Sissiborgaon and Dhemaji circles have been cut off.
Dhemaji additional deputy commissioner Unnat Kumar Baruah had on Thursday said that the Border Road Organisation (BRO) would restore the surface communication within a day by setting up a bailey bridge in the breached portion.
