State Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia on Monday visited North Bengal to take stock of the situation. “Heavy rainfall in parts of North Bengal pose a serious threat to river embankments. The rivers with its origin in Bhutan have not been maintained properly in the past resulting in a rise in their river bed. The work to repair breached embankments has started,” Bhunia said.

Patna: With the onset of Monsoon, Fear of Large Floods is also looming over the State. A number of rivers are reported to be flowing above the danger mark. 'The sorrow of Bihar' Kosi has once again breached its embankment at Supaul inundating three hundred houses while waters of river Gandaka entered 20 houses of Gopalganj district. People of the state are living in fear as rivers like Bagmati, Baya and Kareh are also flowing above the danger mark. There are reports of several places at Road Links being Breached. People have been Compelled to Take Shelter at higher places.

Siliguri: Over 80,000 people have been affected by floods in West Bengal?s three northern districts of Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Cooch Behar. However, with rainfall ending and the river water levels dipping, the situation is likely to improve, an official said Tuesday.

?With the decrease in rainfall, the water level of major rivers has been receding. The flood situation in the districts is likely to improve over the coming days,? North Bengal Flood Control Authority chairman Narayan Chatterjee said.

Patna: Incessant rains in the catchment areas have caused rivers flowing through north Bihar to swell and flood parts of West Champaran, Saharsa and Kishaganj districts.

Some of the rivers flowing through the area have crossed the danger mark.

Reports reaching here said flood waters have inundated several blocks of West Champaran district following release of water from Valmikinagar barrage. Several villages in Saharsa and Kishanganj were also submerged.

The floodwaters of Gandak and Bhapsa rivers completely submerged a girls school at Harna Tad in Bagaha sub-division.

India 11 killed in heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: A total of 11 persons have lost their lives following heavy rain in seven districts of Madhya Pradesh in the last five days, state chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said here on Monday.

Of the 11, four died in Hoshangabad, three in Ujjain, two in Damoh and one each in Sehore and Dewas, the chief minister told reporters at the state Hangar after an aerial survey of the affected districts.

There has also been heavy loss of cattle and its estimate is being prepared, he said.

Incessant rains for over 30 hours in several parts of Madhya Pradesh crippled normal life. The areas that witnessed heavy rainfall include Indore, Hoshangabad, Seoni-Malwa, Dewas, Harda and Sehore districts. The meteorology department has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in most parts of the State.

With the heavy rains, several rivers and rivulets are flowing near the danger mark. Bhopal has lost its connectivity with Sehore and Indore. Since rainwater played havoc and the low-lying areas were inundated, the district administration shifted many families to safe places in Indore,

Sehore, Harda and Hoshangabad districts.

In Indore, several low-lying colonies in Khajrana and Bhanwarkua areas were inundated. Roads were flooded with rainwater as sewer system got choked at various places. Public transportation, too, has been adversely hit. About 110 mm (11 cm) rainfall has been recorded till 2 pm on Saturday. Heavy showers have been predicted in Malwa region in the next two days.

22 people trapped in Jammu flash flood

As many as 22 people were today trapped in flash floods in Jammu region, prompting the authorities to sound an alert in the region.

"A flash flood alert has been sounded in Jammu. Due to heavy overnight rains, various rivers in Jammu region are flooded...22 people and large number of cattle are trapped in the flash floods in Ujh and Tawi rivers," an official said.
"Of the 22 people, 15 are trapped in Ujh river at Khadwal area in Kathua district and two each in Mayachak, Nagri, Sujanal (Satwari) and Muthi areas, he said.

10 killed, 38 missing as heavy rain batters Uttarakhand

DEHRA DUN: Ten people were killed and 38 others went missing as incessant rains battered Uttarakhand on Saturday triggering landslides, cloud bursts and flash floods which flattened homes and stranded hundreds of pilgrims with the Chardham Yatra coming to a grinding halt.

The Garhwal region bore the brunt of the natural calamity.

Flash Floods in India Leave 7 Dead, 19 Missing

LUCKNOW, India August 4, 2012 (AP)
Flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have killed at least seven people in northern India, including three firefighters who were swept away as they helped rescue the stranded, an official said Saturday.

At least 19 other people — all construction workers — were missing and may have been washed away by the floods that hit the Himalayan foothills in Uttarakhand state, said district official R. Ramesh.

The men were working on a hydro-electric project when they disappeared, he said.

DEHRADUN/MANALI: At least 31 people were feared dead and hundreds homeless as incessant rain battered the northern states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu all through Friday night, triggering landslides, cloud bursts and flash floods.

The Chardham Yatra to Gangotri and Yamunotri was suspended for the second day on Saturday as several pilgrims were stranded due to landslides. Hundreds of ITBP and BRO officers have been deployed to clear roads and rescue the trapped pilgrims, authorities said.

Uttarakhand floods toll rises to 34; ITBP, police search for bodies

ITBP and police personnel on Sunday searched debris of flattened homes and dug rubbles to look for more bodies in rain-ravaged Uttarakhand where the toll due to the incessant downpour reached 34.

Six people were still missing in the Uttarkashi district, said a top government official.

?In Uttarakashi alone, 31 people have been killed and six are still missing following heavy rains,? District Magistrate R Rajesh Kumar said.

Twenty three workers of the state-run UJVN Ltd?s Assi Ganga hydel project, who went missing early Saturday following a cloud burst in the upper hills of Uttarkashi district, have now been declared dead.

Toll rises to 35, rescue ops in full swing

Relief and rescue operations were in full swing in Uttarkashi on Sunday, a day after sudden flash floods in the district. The district administration had roped in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Army in the operation and the death toll has risen to 35.

Teams of ITBP, Army and the local police searched debris of the landslides and flattened homes in the district to look for more bodies. Six people were still missing in the district, till last reports came in on Sunday. ?About 30 people have been killed and at least six are missing in Uttarkashi alone. The total death toll so far is 35,? Uttarkashi District Magistrate, R Rajesh Kumar said.
