12 test positive for typhus in Tricity
TNN | Sep 28, 2012, 03.37AM IST

CHANDIGARH: A sudden spurt in the number of fever cases due to scrub typhus from the city and surrounding areas has left medical fraternity in the PGI alarmed.
"We have seen 10 to 12 positive cases from Tricity in the recent weeks. This is startling as the topography here does not permit the mite to breed," said Dr Sunil Sethi of PGI's department of medical microbiology. Scrub typhus, a zonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, has claimed many lives in HP. Common symptoms of the disease, which is also called bed bug, include fever, cough and muscle pain.

Deadly scrub typhus on the rise in Chennai
Ekatha Ann John, TNN | May 6, 2013, 06.05 AM IST

CHENNAI: Serena, a 43-yearold resident of Guindy, was admitted to a leading hospital when her fever didn't abate even after six weeks on antibiotics. Two days later, she died of multi-organ failure, leaving doctors baffled.

A light brown mark near her underarm was what gave them a clue - scrub typhus. It was once considered a rare disease transmitted from animals to humans, but hospitals are seeing a spurt in incidence in the past three years. What doctors find even more unsettling is that cases have been trickling in at the peak of summer. Previously, it was prevalent just after the rains.
...
CMC and Apollo Hospitals received 300 scrub typhus cases each last year . "Three years ago, the fatality rate was 14% to 15%. Now it has come down to 8% but even that is quite high. Many cases go undetected ," said Dr Varghese . The disease shows symptoms similar to dengue , typhoid and malaria . "Often , doctors look for symptoms of shrub typhus as a last resort , by which time it may be too late ," said Dr Balaramachandran , chief of intensive care , Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital .

HP: Scrub typhus claiming lives

...
?The total number of scrub typhus deaths has risen to eight with the death of a five-year-old boy yesterday (Thursday),? an Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) official here told IANS.

So far, 630 patients suffering from the disease have been reported in the IGMCH this year, he said, and added that the arrival of scrub typhus patients would continue till October-end. Since there is a dearth of well-equipped hospitals in other parts of the state, many patients are referred to the state capital for treatment.

Scrub typhus surfaces in Nagpur too (Maharashtra)
Payal Gwalani, TNN | Oct 1, 2013, 07.38 AM IST

Nagpur: A disease generally associated with agricultural labourers and villagers, scrub typhus has been raising its head in the cities too. Several hospitals in the city have seen proven or suspected cases of the infection in the last couple of months.

Last year, around the same time, three cases of the disease were reported at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), the first time the disease was reported in Central India. Infectious disease specialist Dr Ashwini Tayade said she had seen at least ten patients with the disease in different hospitals over last couple of months. "Most cases are easily confused with other illnesses like malaria or leptospirosis. Perhaps, doctors here would not think of scrub typhus as it is not very common in this area," she said. Having seen several cases while working in Chennai, she suggested the doctors to get the patients tested for scrub typhus as well.

ADILABAD, October 11, 2013 (Andhra Pradesh)
RIMS detects new type of fever

Proper utilisation of the Infectious Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad, has resulted in detection of the first cases of Scrub typhus or Rickettsial fever in the State. The discovery will go a long way in saving lives, especially in the rural and agency areas of Adilabad district.

M. Suryakant, an alert paediatrician at the RIMS, could zero in on the rare disease which has a tendency to mislead doctors as it exhibits symptoms similar to dengue, falciparum malaria, Japanese encephalitis and meningitis. ?An 'eschar' or a burn mark looking to have been inflicted by a cigarette led me to explore this disease and the National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi has confirmed the finding,? Dr. Suryakant revealed.

Alert against scrub typhus in Kerala

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
...
Given its increasing incidence in the State, scrub typhus has been included on the list of infectious diseases under close surveillance and reported through the State?s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme since January 2012. Scrub typhus is easily treatable with antibiotics, but late or wrong diagnosis can lead to liver or renal failure, circulatory collapse and even death, doctors warn. The disease is the third common infectious disease in Thiruvananthapuram district, after dengue and leptospirosis. The disease presents itself as persistent fever and generalised body pain or headache. It can be recognised by the sores or scabs on the skin. The Health Department will organise workshops across the State, a statement issued by the Director of Health Service said.

Beware! Mite bite might bring deadly infection (Tamil Nadu)

Posted on November 20, 2013 in Chennai
U Tejonmayam

If you step into slushy soil, make sure you wash your feet, as you might just contract Scrub Typhus.

The showers might have brought some respite to the city from heat, but the slush and loose soil it left behind on the roads might bring nothing but harm.

Doctors in the city are warning of an infection that spreads due to the bite of mites found in the soil.

These mites cause a disease called Scrub Typhus that is prevalent during peak monsoon season. The disease, which leaves symptoms similar to other monsoon-related diseases, could prove fatal if not diagnosed and treated on time.

Medical experts have been expressing concern over Scrub Typhus as they have been witnessing a rise in the number of cases at government hospitals.

KOZHIKODE: If you have fever and happen to notice symptoms including sore skin and scar on body, fever or body pain it would be wise to consult a qualified doctor. The symptoms could be those of scrub typhus, a communicable disease increasingly reported from various parts of Malabar. A zoonotic disease, scrub typhus can be transferred from animals to humans.

Health experts here have warned people, especially residents of hilly areas, to keep vigilance against scrub typhus. Kozhikode district has already reported two cases and one death suspected to be caused as a result of the disease.

Doctors unable to identify scrub typhus tick (Mizoram)
TNN | Nov 30, 2013, 11.45 AM IST

AIZAWL: Doctors are not being able to identify the disease-causing tick in a number of scrub typhus patients in Champai district bordering Myanmar. At least seven people, including children, from the area are suffering from high fever and are being treated at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Khawbung village of the district for the past few days.

The medical officer of the health centre, Vanlalrengpuia, said the patients were suffering from continuous high fever and, in some cases, delirium. "The cause of the fever has been identified as scrub typhus, caused by bites by ticks in forests," he said. The high fever, accompanied with severe headache, is making it difficult for the patients to eat, he said, adding the stings were visible on some of the patients.
...
He said many patients, who were earlier suspected to have died of malaria, might actually have fallen prey to scrub typhus.
