Bangalore: Karnataka government has taken measures to check the mysterious fever "chicken gunya" that has affected a population of over 36,000 in nine districts of the state, minister for Health R Ashok informed the state assembly today.

Besides releasing funds to the tune of Rs 10 to 25 lakh to the affected districts, the government has taken on a warfooting the fogging exercise to eradicate mosquitoes, which spread the disease, he told M Mallikarjun Kharge and others who raised the issue during zero hour.

A team of experts from National Institute of Communicable Diseases have been touring the affected districts, Ashok said adding that in the wake of shortage of fogging machines, efforts were on to hire them from Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Even at taluk level, Health officials have been provided with Rs one lakh to purchase medicine in the event of exigency, he said.

The Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has convened a meeting of top officials of Revenue, Health, Urban Development and other concerned departments this evening to review the situation, Ashok said.

The government has also planned to involve NGOs and Anganwadi workers to distribute medicine to afflicted people, he said.

Replying to a query, he said no case of birdflu has been reported in Karnataka so far.

Kharge pointed out that scarcity of funds and medicines have come in the way of tackling the disease that was spreading at an alarming rate and wanted the government to initiate appropriate steps to contain the fever.
