Chilika guest tests positive for bird flu

Berhampur: Bird flu scare came back to roost in the state after a migratory bird in Chilika Lake reportedly tested positive for the dreaded disease. Out of eight samples of migratory birds tested at High Security Animal Disease ( HSAD) Laboratory in Bhopal, a northern pintail reportedly tested positive for bird flu.
The tests were conducted on January 21 but the report was rent to the veterinary department a few days ago, said sources. Wildlife officials, however, said there was no need to panic as around 90% of migratory birds have already left Chilika. Moreover, there was no report of the death of any bird in the lake due to any other disease, they said.

The Odisha government has alerted all its district authorities after a swab sample collected from a migratory bird tested positive for bird flu, an official said in Bhubaneshwar on Saturday.
The samples of some migratory birds in Chilika Lake were sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal Jan 20 after they were found having flu-like symptoms, said Satyabrata Sahu, state secretary of the fishery and animal resources department.

Forest staff stir hits flu surveillance

BHUBANESWAR/BERHAMPUR/KENDRAPADA: The ongoing agitation by forest staff affected surveillance of birds in Chilika Lake, which the government had heightened after a migratory bird tested positive for avian flu recently.
Divisional Forest Officer (Chilika wildlife) B P Acharya said they are trying to manage the situation. "We are conducting surveillance with the available manpower. We are also taking help from general public to know about any unusual development in the vast lake," the DFO said. Those on strike include 35 staff members under the Chilika Wildlife Division deputed for the upkeep of the 1100-sq km lake.

Bird flu outbreak in Chilka lake

The Odisha government has asked the local administration of three districts, two in the coastal region and one in the southern zone, to remain in high alert after a confirmed case of bird flu was detected in Chilka lake which houses one of the topmost winter homes for migratory birds in the country.
The nearly 1100 sq km in size brackish water lagoon, spreads over these three districts of Khurda, Puri and Ganjam. ?Last month we had sent blood samples of eight migratory birds for tests in a laboratory outside the state and one of them has been confirmed as a positive case of bird flu. Therefore, the three districts which are having direct links with Chilka lake have been put on high alert?, said an official in the wildlife division of the state forest department...

Avian influenza: ADRI collects fresh samples to be tested

A team from Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) collected fresh samples from migratory birds in Chilika lagoon which is now under the scanner for emergence of avian influenza. As many as seven samples were collected from Shoveller and Gadwit by the team on Sunday.
