PARADIP: Even as mass death of crows shows no signs of relenting in Paradip, recovery of duck carcasses in several slums in the town has sparked off panic among the residents.
Suspecting bird flu outbreak, a three-member expert team from Animal Disease Research Institute (ADRI) at Phulanakhara in Cuttack visited poultry farms in different slums of Paradip area on Thursday.

BHUBANESWAR: An alert has been sounded and surveillance imposed in coastal pockets after the mass deaths of crows in Paradip were found to have been caused by avian influenza.The Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) had collected samples of three dead crows which tested positive for H5N1, Joint Director Dr Lokanath Behera told this paper on Friday.

KENDRAPADA: Fear gripped Paradip on Saturday after scientists of the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal found that three dead crows from the port town in Jagatsinghpur district had tested positive for H5N1...

"As many as 40 crows have died in the town this year, till January 30. The samples we collected were sent to the Animal Disease Research Laboratory in Cuttack. Officials there sent the samples to the Bhopal institute," said Ramesh Chandra Behera, chief district veterinary officer of Jagatsinghpur.

The Jagatsinghpur district administration in Odisha has begun culling of chickens in the port town of Paradip from Sunday evening after confirmation of avian flu in different bird species.

?A fortnight ago, we got samples of two dead crows to Animal Disease Research Institute, Fulnakhara. It confirmed the presence of H5N1. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal also confirmed the same,? said Ramesh Behera, Chief District Veterinary Officer of Jagatsinghpur.

Dr. Behera said samples of one duck and two chickens also showed the presence of H5N1.

Paradip/Bhubaneswar: Odisha government today imposed a ban of three months on poultry sale and farming in bird flu affected Paradip.

Authorities have culled 2,000 chickens and ducks in Paradip to prevent the spread of the virus. "We have set up checkpoints with the help of police to prevent traders from supplying chickens and ducks from Paradip to other areas. Around 800 birds within a one-km radius of Sandhakuda and Bada bazaar in Paradip were culled on Sunday and Monday. They were buried in a deep pit lined with lime," said Ramesh Chandra Behera, chief district veterinary officer, Jagatsinghpur.

"We will cull all the chickens and ducks in Paradip within four days. The poultry shop owners will get compensation. Ten rapid action teams have been pressed into service for culling," Behera added.
