Manipur government today said that the state was free from bird flu even as avian influenza was detected in neighbouring Myanmar and Manipur.
Experts at the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal which undertook tests on the samples sent from Lengpui village near here said that the 10 local breed chickens did not die due to avian flu, official sources said.
The chickens which died during mid-November were suspected to have been infected with bird flue as veterinary doctors here considered the symptoms to be very similar to bird flu.
Dr C Sangnghina, Director of the state Veterinary department, said that rat poison, widely used this year to control the rising rodent population due to 'Mautam' or gregarious bamboo flowering was the most likely cause of the death of the chickens. "The chickens must have eaten dead rats",
Sangnghina said adding most of the mass death of chickens in the state had been due to poisoning, mainly rat poison. :tiphat:
