Mysterious disease claims nine lives in Kashipur

Statesman News Service
RAYAGADA, May 8: Fears of recurrence of cholera and gastroenteritis epidemic, that had claimed hundreds of lives in tribal-dominated Kash-ipur last August were rekindled as at least nine people, mostly children, died due a mysterious disease over the last 10 days.
Medical teams have rushed to the affected villages. While official sources put the death toll at nine, unofficial figures said 14 had died of the un known disease.
Podasil area under Sunger panchayat is said to be worst hit with at least seven casualties, all of them children. Similarly, at Kolonora health centre, a one-year old girl child has died said these sources.
At least 50 children are said to be affected with the disease, sources said. Villagers said all the deceased children had fever and later succumbed, before the disease was diagnosed. The Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr P Samantaray with another doctor visited Kashipur health centre and distributed medicines.
A medical team later rushed to the village and collected blood sample for laboratory tests. Reliable sources said initial medical investigations revealed a malaria outbreak in the area. Unless and until we get the reports on blood tests we cannot draw any conclusion, added health centre sources. The district authorities have reviewed the situation and directed block development officers to keep a close watch. At least 600 rapid diagnostic kits have been sent to Kashipur area said district authorities here.
