Moth larvae outbreak in Govandi

Monsoon brings with it several waterborne diseases, but this one has left residents and civic authorities scratching their heads, and all over. About 80% the 12,000 residents of Borla village in Govandi (East) are suffering from infection being spread by what appears to be moth larvae, known as ?survant? in the local language. A similar outbreak was reported in Thane creek in 2008.
Contact with the bristles of the 1-cm-long insect causes severe itching and skin rashes, followed by fever and weakness. ?We have been spending sleepless nights for a month. It?s difficult to spot the insect as it camouflages in the surroundings,? said Surendra Ka-dam, a resident of the village.
A majority of those affected are children. The civic-run school near-by is also run over by an army of these insects.
