Amidst the Southwest monsoon, the incidence of waterborne diseases—driven by drinking water contamination and poor sanitation—has surged to unprecedented levels, causing great alarm among the public and the health sector.
In the first six months of this year alone, 133 people have died from severe waterborne diseases. Amoebic Encephalitis, Shigella bacterial infections, diarrhea, and influenza are spreading rapidly across the state.

Threat of Influenza and Diarrhea
Influenza cases have intensified due to delays in carrying out sanitation measures prior to the onset of the rainy season; 42 people have lost their lives so far this year. Viruses such as H1N1 and H3N2 spread rapidly during colder periods. Children, the elderly, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, often arriving at hospitals late because the illness is mistaken for a common fever.
Similarly, cases of food poisoning have risen due to the consumption of outside food. The fact that over 3.18 lakh people have been affected by diarrhea has highlighted deficiencies in the state's food safety and sanitation infrastructure
