Over 3,400 students test positive for malaria in Odisha

Summary: Blood samples of 19,767 students of 214 residential schools run by ST and SC development department in the tribal-dominated district were tested between July 6 and August 3. The collector directed the health officials to conduct the tests after 65 of 143 students of a primary residential school at Ranipathara were found suffering from the vector-borne disease last month. The collector launched a three-month malaria, dengue and diarrhoea awareness drive last week and said the focus will be on school children...
 
90% of malarial deaths happen in rural India

Stagnant puddles, which are a breeding ground for mosquitoes, follow the rains every year causing an increase in the incidence of water-borne diseases. Malaria is the third most common of these diseases in India after diarrhoea and typhoid. In 2014, the number of malaria cases in the country rose to 10,70,513, up from 8,81,730 in 2013. 35 countries, India being one of them, contributes to 96% of the total malaria cases and 98% of the total malaria deaths in the world. India is also one of the three countries that accounts for 97% of the malaria cases in South East Asia.

The maximum number of malaria cases in Indian cities are reported from Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Vadodara, Vishakapatnam, Vijayawada and Pune thanks to increasing urbanisation, industrialisation, and construction projects. According to the Annual Report of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare 2013-14, the Urban Malaria Scheme is currently being implemented in 131 towns of 19 States and Union Territories covering 130 million people but is it enough?

A 2010 Lancet study stated that more than 2 lakh (200,000) Indians die of malaria every year. This generated a lot of controversy as the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme had reported only 9,778 deaths due to malaria in the last decade. The same study also found that 90% of deaths occurred in rural areas, of which 86% occurred at home without any medical attention. According to the World Malaria Report 2014, 22% (275.5m) of India's population live in high transmission (> 1 case per 1,000 population) areas. In 2013, Maharashtra and Odisha reported the highest number of deaths due to malaria but the highest number of registered malaria cases were reported in Odisha (2 lakh) followed by Chhattisgarh (1 lakh) and Jharkhand (97,215) cases.

Malaria grips Mewat, 1,448 cases so far

Efforts being made by the local health authorities notwithstanding, Mewat district remains infested with malaria-causing mosquitoes. In all, 1,448 cases of the vector-borne disease have been reported in the district this season so far. The number is around four times more than the last year?s figure.
Malaria outbreak has claimed 17 lives in rural areas of the district, exposing ill-preparedness of the authorities to tackle the situation. The authorities have, however, confirmed only one death due to malaria so far.

As per the health authorities? record, four persons each in Hathan and Naheda, three each in Budoli and Malhaka, two in Sudaka and one in Jarokdi village have died due to fever so far. Sources, however, say the actual number of deaths is much more than that.

Delhi: Dengue, malaria deaths underreported in 2015

Going by Delhi government data, Malaria ? another notifiable disease ? has also been under-reported. In 2015, doctors certified 164 deaths to be due to malaria, the government report states. NVBDCP data shows only 54 people were diagnosed with malaria and no one died of it.
The NVBDCP data says there have been no malaria deaths in the last four years in Delhi. This year, the corporations reported six suspected malaria deaths.
