RTI by NGO Reveals TB, Malaria Mortality in Mumbai 6 Times Higher than BMC Figures
By Soumo Ghosh
July 16, 2014 19:57 IST

A discrepancy in the number of deaths due to Tuberculosis (TB) reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been found by Praja, an NGO, with the help of information obtained via the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

This discrepancy was found by comparing BMC Health Department's figures with the "cause of death" reason shown in the death certificates, issued by the BMC themselves. BMC's health department showed that there has been a total of 1,393 deaths due to TB, in the year 2013-14.

However, Praja, in their new findings, discovered that a total of 7,127 people have died due to TB in that span of time. The number of TB deaths is around five times higher than the number of TB deaths on the records of the BMC's health department...

More Than 100 Die as Tripura Battles Malaria
All India | Written by Urmimala Bhattacharjee | Updated: July 19, 2014 18:29 IST

Agartala: Tripura has been battling malaria for the past two months. A fresh outbreak has compounded the already grim situation, leading to deaths of 120 people across the state.

Village after village has been affected, and a majority of the dead are children. Like Dhanaram's two-year-old nephew Biswaram who died of malaria last week. The family is extremely poor and doesn't have access to basic healthcare since he lives in a remote village.

Till the doctor said, he was not even aware that the fever which Biswaram suffered was because of malaria...

FIR against Tripura health officials for malaria deaths
TNN | Jul 20, 2014, 10.58 AM IST

AGARTALA: On Saturday, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) filed a criminal case against three senior health officials at the state health department, blaming the institution for an increase in the number of deaths caused by malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
...
In the FIR, Ashok Sinha, physician and Congress spokesperson, accused the health officials of violating the guidelines for regulating the treatment protocol of vector borne diseases provided by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), which he claimed to be the reason for the increase in deaths caused by malaria in Tripura.

Although the official figure of malaria induced deaths is 69 in the last two months, the report formulated by NGOs and private missionaries working on health issues in worse affected areas of North Tripura, Dhalai, Khowai and South Tripura districts estimate the death toll to be 172.

The sting in the tale: How Tripura is grappling with an outbreak of malaria
KumKum Dasgupta July 20, 2014
First Published: 00:08 IST(20/7/2014) | Last Updated: 01:45 IST(20/7/2014)

Ninety-three kilometres from Agartala, the capital of landlocked Tripura, is the Dhalai District Hospital. From the outside, the cream-coloured building looks impressive: it has three floors, a spacious vehicle parking zone, a waiting area for patients and their families, and a large lobby. Inside, it?s a different story; it is as ramshackle as the state?s healthcare system. Its cover was blown this June when the state found itself in the grip of an unprecedented malaria outbreak in five of its eight districts. Dhalai, one of India?s 250 most backward districts, is the epicentre of the crisis. The first cases (eight deaths of which six were children) were reported from the Gandachara subdivision of the district on June 10.

On the first floor of the hospital are two large halls, the makeshift ?malaria wards?. They have no beds, only haphazardly kept brown Rexene-covered mattresses on the floor for patients and their families; clothes, bags, utensils and IV stands with medicine pouches were scattered all over the place. Despite the 70-odd patients ? several of them sick children in tattered clothes lying motionless ? the wards were eerily quiet.

According to the state?s Left Front government, more than 1,01,025 people, mainly tribals, have fallen ill with malaria and fever. 69 have died and more than 31,374 have been infected. Ninety percent of the dead are children below the age of 10 years. This is because tribal children are malnourished and have low immunity. In 2013, there were 2,561 malaria cases and only one death.

What I Saw In My Stay At Tripura Amidst A Frightening Malaria Outbreak

23rd July, 2014
By Impuri Ngayawon - World Vision India:

At 35,000 feet above sea level, staring down from the flight window, I type down the thoughts that keep my feet on the ground and humble me. There is a mixed feeling of success and failure. I escaped every possible malaria germ carrying mosquito during my entire stay in Dhalai district of Tripura. This was my success. The fact that I could not be of much help to those who were suffering from malaria is my failure. I am returning home with many names, faces, numbers and stories of people facing the malaria epidemic.

At my first stop, I met Ananta, an 8-year-old boy who was brought by his school teacher to the temporary health centre (formerly a CRPF godown), at Mungiakami village in the Khowai district. Ananta, still in his school uniform was lying on the floor, crying. The person lying next to him on the floor told us that Ananta?s mother had passed away and his father was yet to be informed of his condition, as his village was very remote and difficult to reach. Fear for Ananta?s safety engulfed my mind and I couldn?t help but wonder how many children like him must be there who are left unattended without any guardian and can easily fall prey to other threats like trafficking and assaults.
