8 in Chennai die of Weil?s disease, severe form of lepto, in 3 weeks

ChENNAI: Doctors have reported a sudden spurt in cases of Weil's disease, a severe form of leptospirosis, with labs confirming at least eight deaths due to the disease in the city in the past three weeks.
Weil's disease causes liver, kidney failure and bleeding and has a death rate of more than 10%, even with treatment. Experts said the surge in cases was possibly due to last month's floods.
All the deaths took place in Government General Hospital (GH), officials said on condition of anonymity. The hospital treats at least two cases of leptospirosis.

Kandivli woman first lepto death this year

Mumbai: The city registered this year's first rain-related fatality when a 35-year-old Kandivli resident succumbed to lung complications arising out of a leptospirosis infection on Friday.
The woman, who lived in Jagdamba Chawl of Hanumant Nagar in Kandivli (East), was admitted to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital on July 13 and had a history of wading through flood water, said the civic health report issued on Saturday.
Leptospirosis emerged as a big public health worry in 2015, when 12 people succumbed to it within the first week of July.

With the monsoon well settled in the city, at least three leptospirosis deaths have taken place in last one week with the patients? condition worsening in less than four days despite hospitalisation.
According to the civic health department, the death toll due to the bacteria-infected disease has reached four so far in July. Last year, close to 20 deaths were recorded.
?We have conducted PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test on all three and found it positive for leptospirosis infection,? said Dr Minnie Khetarpal, deputy executive health officer at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Chennai sees surge in rat fever cases

Chennai: With 71 reported cases of leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever, this year as of July 22, the city is witnessing an almost two-fold increase in the disease compared to the January-July period in 2015.
According to data provided by the Greater Chennai Corporation, 18 leptospirosis cases have been reported in July alone.

With respect to leptospirosis, corporation officials said that the disease's absence from the notified list was making it difficult for them to monitor cases. Former director of public health Dr S Elango said that the inclusion of leptospirosis in the notified list was deemed unnecessary as its case fatality rate was low. "An easier way to keep track of leptospirosis would be to monitor the jaundice cases," he said, adding that acute leptospirosis leads to jaundice and only these patients are considered at risk.

An 18-year-old girl from Govandi succumbed to leptospirosis on August 6. This is the first death in August and fifth this rainy season in the city.

"The girl was admitted to Sion hospital on August 1 with high fever and vomitting. She died of multi-organ failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome that is usually associated with leptospirosis infection," said Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Director of Public Health K. Kolandaisamy said the two villages in Tiruvallur district suffered from poor sanitary conditions and that there had been water stagnation and Aedes mosquito breeding in some parts...

Ten children from the villages are hospitalised.... In addition, health camps begun in the villages have treated 92 cases as outpatients.

According to doctors at ICH, the two children who died on Saturday, had been very ill when they were admitted. Mohan was admitted on Friday afternoon, while Mohan Kumar was admitted on Thursday. ?Both had been admitted to the Intensive Medical Care Unit. Mohan Kumar died after multi-organ failure, while the former had refractory shock and a post-cardiac arrest,? a doctor said.

Yuvraj, according to the director of the Institute D. Saminathan, is suspected to have had leptospirosis, but the confirmatory report for this has not yet come....

Outbreak of fever in Tiruvallur kills four

A fever outbreak in two villages of Tiruvallur district has so far led to the death of four children, hospitalisation of 10 kids and outpatient treatment for 92 others.

On Friday, a quack from a nearby village was arrested. On Saturday, D. Mohan, 9, and S. Mohan Kumar, 6, from Adi Andhrawada, sons of labourers, who had been admitted to the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, died.

On Thursday, five-year-old Santhosh died, and on August 13, four-year-old B. Yuvraj, from Kaverirajapuram, died.

While the hospital said the deaths were not due to dengue...

Officials rush to Tiruvallur to combat dengue

CHENNAI: When a group of public health experts visited Adi Andhrawada, a village in Tiruvallur district, to investigate the death of two siblings, they found the suspect at the victims' doorstep: a large drum of water breeding mosquito larvae.
Mohan, 9, and his brother S Mohan Kumar, 6, belonging to a family of labourers, had been admitted to the Institute of Child Health with fever last week. Both of them died on Saturday. While Mohan Kumar died of multi-organ failure caused by a viral or water-borne infection, serological tests on his brother confirmed a disease that officials dread at this time of the year - dengue.

Eleven admitted with fever stable: Health department

The 11 persons from two villages in Tiruvallur district who had been admitted to various hospitals with fever, were all in a stable condition, said Director of Public Health K. Kolandaisamy on Monday.

The two villages, Adi Andhrawada and Kaverirajapuram have been in the grip of an outbreak of fever over the last several days.

In the last week, four children ? one who suffered from dengue ? from the villages have died.

Close to 100 persons have been given outpatient treatment at the medical camps being conducted at the villages, Dr. Kolandaisamy said.

In a second instance of death due to leptospirosis in August, a 55-year-old Kandivali resident succumbed to it on August 19. The deceased who was an autorickshaw driver by profession, was admitted to Kasturba hospital on August 18.

The medical wards at the Tiruvallur government hospital are full: on every bed, patients talk about a fever they have had for a few days and the treatment. The hospital is one of the hubs for fever cases that have racked the district for over 10 days now, and as of Saturday afternoon had a total of 79 patients with fever, of whom 10 had been admitted on that day. Of these, two tested positive for dengue and doctors were planning to discharge 14. Over 100 patients with fever had been seen as outpatients on Saturday, a senior hospital official said. Apart from dengue, typhoid and leptospirosis, there has been a suspected case of scrub typhus, he said.

A few days ago, a patient said, each bed in the ward had two patients. Another patient holds a dengue positive report from a private lab, but said the hospital has not confirmed his diagnosis.

128 patients
So what is going on in Tiruvallur? In the last week, five children from the district have died after contracting ?fever?, all at the Institute of Child Health, Egmore. In all, 128 patients with fever have been admitted to hospitals in the district and in Chennai as of Saturday.

While four of these deaths were of children from two adjoining villages ? Kaverirajapuram and Adi Andhrawada ? the fifth was of a child from Keerapakkam, near Ponneri. Officials say the deaths are not connected: at the two villages, the infections were mixed and included dengue and leptospirosis, while the fifth death was due to Hepatitis A, they say.

Another boy from Tiruvallur dies of fever

Fifteen-year-old Sreenivasan from Pothatturpettai in Tiruvallur district died at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital late on Saturday night.

This is the sixth death in the district in the last two weeks. ?The boy died of viral hemorrhagic fever,? said a doctor at the hospital.

The teen was admitted to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for a few days before being referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

CHENNAI: A three-year-old girl from Tiruvallur died of suspected typhoid at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) here early on Sunday morning. This is the eighth death of a child from the district since mid-August.
The child, H Manitha, hailing from Balapuram, around 135km from Chennai, was brought to ICH on Saturday afternoon in a semi-conscious state. "She had severe sepsis which resulted in extremely low blood pressure, limiting blood flow to the organs," said Dr D Saminathan, director, ICH. Sepsis is an extreme immune system response to an infection that has spread throughout the blood and tissues.

One more person dies of fever

: A person of Kathikaranpatti near Manapparai died on Tuesday after being admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital with fever.

The platelet count of Sankar Ganesh, 33, was reported to be normal when he was admitted to the MGMGH on Monday. However, he died as he was not responded to the treatment. The exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. However, health department authorities said that Mr. Ganesh was under treatment for depression for the last few years. He had the history of epilepsy as well.

He is the second person from the village to die of fever.

Kundapur, Oct 15: The recent outbreak of rat fever in Kundapur has been a cause for concern among locals. A woman reportedly affected by it died here. Ravi, a youth from Koteshwar is also suspected to have died due to it on Wednesday. The fever had created anxiety in Thekkatte Kumbhasi earlier.

Though the epidemic is spreading rapidly for months, effective awareness is lacking.

Kundapur taluk medical officer has said that awareness programme, sprinkling of medicine to the wells in the affected areas and preventive measures among farmers in the affected areas are being undertaken.
