India has seen two major H1N1 outbreaks over the past 17 years, with almost 10,000 people succumbing to the infection.

A 56-year-old woman from Ajanur in Kasaragod district has died after contracting H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, prompting the Kerala Health Department to strengthen surveillance and preventive measures in the area.

The deceased, Yashoda, wife of Karunakaran of Manikoth in Ajanur, Kanhangad, died on July 27 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.

She had been receiving treatment for fever and related health complications.

Yashoda was first admitted to a private hospital in Kasaragod. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to a speciality hospital in Mangaluru, where she later succumbed to the illness.

The Health Department officially confirmed on July 28 that her death was caused by H1N1 influenza and intensified precautionary measures in the locality.

Monitoring of contacts and mask advice

Samples were collected from seven people who had come into close contact with Yashoda and sent for laboratory testing. Officials said all of them are under medical observation as part of contact surveillance.

Kochi hospitals face bed shortage as seasonal diseases surge in July

Kochi: A sharp increase in seasonal diseases in July has pushed private hospitals across the district to the brink, as in-patient admissions have increased, leading to a bed shortage. Some hospitals were forced to postpone elective surgeries due to the issue.

To overcome this, hospitals have set up clinics and daycare facilities for patients with fever.

At the daycare facility, the patients’ vitals are monitored and, if needed, IV fluid is administered. If their condition improves, they are discharged by evening. If they need in-patient admission, they are shifted to a room. However, if beds aren’t available, the hospital shifts them to another hospital in the city after confirming bed availability.

There is an increase in viral fever, influenza, dengue fever, H1N1 and leptospirosis cases in Ernakulam, with 18 deaths in July so far. While 10 deaths were due to leptospirosis, the rest were due to H1N1, influenza A and B, and acute respiratory infection. With incessant rain, doctors fear that there may be an increase in communicable disease cases in the next few weeks.

‘From young to old, all affected’: Delhi sees 6-fold rise in swine flu cases, tally 1,449

Aug 12, 2026

Delhi has recorded a sharp rise in cases of influenza H1N1 or swine flu this year, with 1,449 cases reported as of August 12, more than six times the 229 infections recorded during the corresponding period last year, according to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data.

“Of the 1,449 cases of H1N1 recorded so far this year, 63 were reported on August 11,” Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh told The Indian Express on Wednesday. In 2019, Delhi had recorded 3,637 H1N1 cases and 31 deaths.

Dr S Chatterjee, internal medicine specialist at Apollo Hospital, said the reason for the current rise would be clear only after a genetic study of the virus. “Maybe the virus has mutated, or it’s happening because people are coming into contact with each other more,” he added.
