India , Karnataka - Two suspected cases of Nipah virus reported from a second Indian state - tests NEGATIVE

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Two people suspected to be infected with the brain-damaging Nipah virus are under treatment in India’s Karnataka state, a health official said on Wednesday, after an outbreak of the rare virus in neighboring Kerala state killed 10.

Symptoms of the virus were seen in a 20-year old woman and a 75-year-old man in Karnataka’s port city of Mangalore after they traveled to Kerala and came into contact with infected patients there, Rajesh B.V., a district surveillance officer said by phone.

“They are not confirmed Nipah cases yet, so there is no need to panic ... the situation is under control,” he said, adding that blood samples of the two people have been sent to Manipal Centre for Virus Research and results are awaited by Thursday.

MANGALURU: The two suspected cases involve a 20 year old woman from Kasaragod who had travelled to the Kozhikode hospital where a nurse died due to the NIPAH virus recently. The woman was in close contact with the nurse and was brought to Dakshin Kannada by her sister who is a nursing student in a private nursing college in Mangaluru.

The patient then developed fever from Tuesday and has headache, nausea, bodyache for the past three days and was admitted in a private hospital where her throat swab and blood samples were taken.

The other patient is a 75 year old man who has no history of travel and is a resident of Mangaluru city. He came in complaining of fever and headache and his samples were also collected and sent for analysis. He is currently admitted at the district wenlock hospital in Mangaluru.

Nipah virus: Patients in Mangaluru are improving

The health condition of two patients in the city whose throat swab samples were sent to two laboratories on Tuesday to know whether they are infected with Nipah virus is improving, a health department official said here on Wednesday.

The samples drawn from a 20-year-old woman admitted in a private hospital and a 75-year-old man being treated at the Government Wenlock Hospital had been sent to Manipal Centre for Virus Research, Manipal and National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for analysis.

The report is expected on Thursday, Rajesh B V, Dakshina Kannada Survelliance Officer, told The Hindu. The report of the NIV is final, he said.

?The two patients are doing very well on Wednesday and their condition is improving,? he said adding that they were being given symptomatic treatment separately in the respective hospitals.

Two suspected cases reported from Mangaluru, one from Gadag, Hospitals set up separate wards.

Bengaluru: After two suspected cases of Nipah virus were found in Mangaluru, there has been one more such case in Gadag, and the state is on high alert.
Dr Suresh Shastri, I/C Joint Director (IEC), Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services said, "There was one suspect found on Thursday in Gadag, but we are yet to confirm it. The patient was hospitalised and the blood samples have been sent to Pune for the test."

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has said that there is no case of patients infected by Nipah virus in the district. Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Thursday, Sasikanth Senthil, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, said the health officials had sent throat swab samples of two patients for laboratory test. One of the patients, an employee of a medical college in Kozhikode, was visiting Mangaluru.
?The results have come and they are negative. There is no case in the region. These patients are not showing any symptoms either. They are comfortable, and doing well,? he said.
