Fears of an outbreak of avian flu gripped the city on Tuesday with at least one confirmed case of a chicken infected with the H5N1 virus reported at Dasarahalli near Yelahanka in north Bengaluru. This comes after a gap of more than five years with bird flu last reported in the city in October 2012.

A few days ago, a retail outlet in Dasarahalli reported the death of all its chicken. Officials immediately collected samples and sent them to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal, of which only one bird tested positive for the H5N1 virus. ?The reports arrived on Tuesday afternoon, following which measures to contain the virus were put in place,? said Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner, Health, BBMP.

Sources said that the retail outlet which reported the deaths had sourced the chicken from Tamil Nadu.

Fresh bout of bird flu hits city

Bengaluru has been affected by bird flu, it has been confirmed after an H5N1 virus was found in a bunch of chicken from a shop in Thanisandra, Northeast Bengaluru.

The Health Department has declared areas within the one-kilometre radius of Dasarahalli an infected zone and places inside the 10-kilometre radius surveillance zone.

Tausif, who runs KGN meat shop in Thanisandra, bought a bunch of chicken from Tamil Nadu on December 28. When four or five of them died, he immediately took the rest to the veterinary hospital in Hebbal. After checking the fowls, the samples were sent to Bhopal's NIHSAD laboratory, where it was confirmed on December 31 that the birds have H5N1 (avian influenza).

The Health Department, which received the report on the diagnosis on Tuesday, has assured that things are under control and there is no need to panic.

BENGALURU: As many as 900 fowls were culled after the avian influenza virus was detected in a dead bird here, civic officials said on Wednesday.

"A chicken was found dead on December 29 at a chicken shop in (suburban) Dasarahalli area and it was confirmed after lab tests that the bird was infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus," Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Joint Commissioner S. Nagaraju told IANS.

Samples from the dead bird were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal and had tested positive, he said.

Bengaluru: Eleven districts in Maharashtra have been put on alert for bird flu after the neighbouring state, Karnataka, reported an outbreak of the avian influenza virus, according to reports.

After eight chickens died of suspected bird flu on December 29, the Karnataka health and family welfare department had on last Wednesday started awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus in the surrounding areas.
